About the Author

The very first vacuum press for use in the woodworking industry was invented by author DARRYL KEIL. In addition to building furniture and cabinets for 20 years, Keil has written for leading woodworking publications, served as a technical consultant to woodworking facilities, and taught veneering classes in the U.S. and abroad. No one is better equipped to write the book on vacuum pressing.

Unique and interesting

I have seen how RC airplane modellers use vacuum bagging to glue balsa to foam wing cores, but this book is about more conventional woodworking applications. He is using vacuum bagging to attach veneers to wooden panels and to bend multiple thin sheets of wood to a form. The accompanying DVD demonstrates most of the processes described in the book and adds a little bit more info in some cases. In particular, the DVD goes into more detail on how vacuum pumps work and what might go wrong.

The last item mentioned in the book is how to use simple jigs and vacuum to hold work pieces to the workbench without clamps (like for sanding or using a router).

I found all of this fascinating and as far as I know it has not been written about before. If you have a vacuum pump already, there will be much to experiment with here. If not, you might want to do a little shopping (esp. on eBay) and see what's available. I have a pump I got off eBay for about $60 some time ago, but I have not tried it yet in the applications described in the book... but I will!

About the Author
Santi V. Buscemi teaches reading, composition, and literature at Middlesex County College in Edison, New Jersey, where he was chair of the Department of English for twenty-eight years. He is the author of A Reader for College Writers, 75 Readings, and 75 Readings Plus. He has lectured on freshman composition and developmental education at regional and national conferences in the United States and South Africa.

Donald Pharr received his bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University and his master’s and doctorate from the University of Georgia. He is the co-author (with Gerald J. Schiffhorst) of the The Short Handbook for Writers, second edition. He taught for many years in the Florida community college system, where he specialized in applied composition: business, technical, and science writing. As well he has spent almost two decades consulting as a technical writer and editor. Dr. Pharr is currently associate professor of English at Saint Leo University.

Whitney Balliett is jazz critic for The New Yorker. He is married to the painter Nancy Balliett. They live in New York City.

Unfortunate title to essential jazz journalism

Whitney Balliett is one of my favorite jazz writers (along with Dan Morgenstern and Ira Gitler), and I've enjoyed reading his pieces in The New Yorker since the 1960s. In the introduction to this book Balliett says he chose the title COLLECTED WORKS because "I like its ring"; that's a bit unfortunate because it gives the wrong impression. These are not his "collected works" but rather, as he again says in the introduction, "a distillation of many of the reviews and critical pieces that I have written about jazz." If you saved most of the original articles as I did, you would have a fairly decent sized pile of pieces that are not included here; perhaps even worse, you would notice that many of the articles appear in the book in truncated form (perhaps that's where the "distillation" comes in). One of the reasons I bought the book was because from its title and size (almost 900 pages) I thought I could take the Collected part literally, and I'd be able to free up some file cabinet space by discarding the original magazine articles. No way. I know this is a personal issue (mainly), but buyers should be aware of what they're getting (or not getting) here.

That being said, what you do get is absolutely worth having. Balliett knows the music as well as anyone and describes what he hears clearly and directly. He writes about the entire spectrum of jazz, from the earliest years of the music up into the avant-garde. Besides being deeply appreciative of the jazz masters (Armstrong, Morton, Ellington, Basie, Parker, Rollins, Coleman, to name just a handful) he writes about hundreds of musicians, good, bad, indifferent (but mainly good) who made it onto the jazz scene. He is particularly fond of good drummers (being a drummer himself). Reading The New Yorker you could be almost assured of getting Balliett's perspective on important jazz happenings in (particularly) the NYC area every couple of weeks or so. It was a wonderful steady diet of superb jazz journalism and criticism. It's great to have what's been included between book covers now, and hopefully what's missing gets published in book form some day, too. I really could use that file space.

In this collection of jazz criticism, Balliett writes of one of the all-time great jazz singers, Mildred Bailey, that she "rarely indulged in blue notes" and that "she was not emotional."

About the Author
Grady Hanrahan, PhD, received his doctorate in environmental analytical chemistry from the University of Plymouth, England. Dr. Hanrahan is currently the John Stauffer Endowed Professor of Analytical Chemistry at California Lutheran University with research interests in the use of modern chemometric methods in the design and development of environmental and bioanalytical instrumentation. He is also exploring the use of neural and evolutionary computational techniques for solving complex chemical problems.

Frank A. Gomez, PhD, received his BS in chemistry from California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA), and his PhD in chemistry from UCLA, where he was a NIH Predoctoral Fellow. From 1991–1994, he was a Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Research Fund Postdoctoral Fellow in the department of chemistry at Harvard University. He is a professor of chemistry at CSULA and is a visiting associate at Caltech in the Applied Physics department.

The title of the book is explained: "By tradition, lies have become mixed with Truth, and we will uncover, expose, or reveal to you some of the things we inherited from Babylon. This book is intended to address the unanswered questions that lurk in the back of many people's minds... The ORIGINS of popular customs have been a lifelong study of mine, and revealing them to others in a way that makes sense is my main goal here... The distortions of the Truth came about because Paganism became mixed into it... Now let's allow the facts to expose the Greco-Roman roots, or 'Replacement Theology.' The true roots of our faith are HEBREW---and are based on the TORAH... Unwittingly, humanity has embraced ancient Babylonian customs rooted in sun worship... Here in the last days, the final message is now going out to the ends of the Earth..." (Pg. 2) He adds, "This book's purpose is to expose the origins of everyday beliefs, customs, and rituals that have become camouflaged in new meanings. Common activities performed today have passed down from ancient Pagan cultures... yet are perfectly preserved religious witchcraft, or nature worship... This book is written in obedience to Ephesians 5:6-11 [e.g., "Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them"].

He holds to an approximately 6,000-year old Creation (pg. 10). He says that "the northern house of Israel was carried into captivity by the Assyrians in 722 BCE. Later, in 586 BCE, the house of Yahudah was likewise carried into captivity by the Babylonians. Their captivity ended with 10% of the people returning after 70 years. The northern tribes were warned to repent ... and would have spent 390 years in captivity for their idolatry with the Asherim trees. They didn't, so the seven-fold penalty kicked in (Lev 26), and their captivity has lasted 2730 years. 722 BCE to 2008 CE. The prodigal Son is turning back to the Torah, and the Olive tree is blossoming." (Pg. 68)

He states that "Easter was already one of the two biggest celebrations observed by Pagans, long before Christianity came along... To ensure a prosperous growing season, Pagans rolled eggs decorated with bright colors of Spring on their fields, hoping to imbue fertility. These eggs were then hidden from 'evil spirits' in rabbits' nests, another symbol of fertility. 'Easter' is the name of the Babylonian 'Mother of Harlots, Rev. 17, and her image stands as the sungoddess 'Lady Liberty' in New York Harbor... Easter: Ostara, or Eastre, was the goddess of Spring in the religion of the ancient Angles and Saxons. Every April a festival was celebrated in her honor. With the beginnings of Christianity, the old gods were put aside. From then on the festival was celebrated in honor of the resurrection of Christ, but was still known as Easter after the old goddess." (Pg. 12-13)

Of the 4-letter biblical name of God [Yod, Hay, Uau, Hay], he argues, "The importance of doing our best to be accurate concerning the Name of Yahuah cannot be overstated. You may have already become convinced of one special way of writing it, but remember He only wrote it as [YHVH]." (Pg. 16) Later, he contends, "The fake name of the Mashiach, 'JESUS,' is a Greco-Romanism, and means absolutely nothing in Hebrew... When taken back to the Greek, it means 'hey-Zeus,' or 'hail Zeus.' ... In this book you will discover the true Name by which we must be saved, which is: Yahusha." (Pg. 145) Still later, he says, "[The name for Jesus of] 'Y'shua' is fine with me... we know our Rabbi did not have a Greek name, nor did he ever hear 'Jesus' on His eardrums... If the proper way to say yod-hay-uau-shin-ayin is not Yahusha, then I'll all ears to learn a better way." (Pg. 175) He also notes, "'Yahushua' and 'Yahusha' are BOTH acceptable transliterations." (Pg. 220)

Of Santa Claus, he says, "what entanglements do we have with a man who supposedly flies horned beasts through the air at night?... One version involves a 3rd-century story about a 'Saint Nicholas'; it had no mention of 'elves,' chimneys, flying reindeer, or supernatural feats.” (Pg. 36) Of the Christmas tree, he states, "A Benedictine monk effectively influenced the Druids in 722 CE to adopt a slight variation of the Asherah tree. When Boniface saw the people of the Druids bringing oak trees into their homes, he diverted them to consider the evergreen tree instead." (Pg. 36) He adds, "Asherah is known in Scripture as the 'Queen of Heaven,' and is called 'Artemis' by the Ephesians in the book of Acts (chapter 19)... The image of Asherah was a tree used by the Pagan Canaanites and Sidonians... When northern Israel was dispersed into the nations by the Assyrians in 722 BCE, they carried this 'tree' with them. The lost tribes or dispersed Israel have preserved one of THEIR most cherished Pagan customs among them: the Christmas tree, or Asherah. If you were brought up with this custom... You were taught to practice an ancient Phoenician form of idolatry, and never knew it." (Pg. 38) Of Halloween, he says, "The ritual we embrace as Halloween was originally called the Feast of the Dead, Samhain, and was on November 1st... Without forcing the Pagans to drop their practices but accept Christianity, the [Roman Catholic Church] merely made allowances to accommodate the barbarians, and called it 'acculturation.' They 'sanctified' the Pagan rituals by absorbing and camouflaging them." (Pg. 47-48)

He refers to his beliefs as "Natsarim Israelite," a "Restoration of Our Israelite Roots." (Pg. 2) Later, he adds, "If we are immersed in the Name of Yahusha, and pronounce our belief in His resurrection while trusting in His blood atonement, we are Natsarim... Who were the 'Nazarenes'? They were the original Hebrew and Gentile converts who followed Yahusha, and so were called NATSARIM." (Pg. 177-178)

White's books are very detailed (particularly when compared to the brochure- or booklet-length publications one usually sees of such "pagan customs"); the book would definitely benefit from a frequent use of FOOTNOTES, showing a valid historical citation for his many controversial assertions. But he is one of the most influential of modern "Christians" [a term he rejects, of course] who follow the Torah, and his books are important reading for anyone studying such movements.
