Not better than the online documentation

I bought this book in the hope of getting a structured introduction to CMake. While the CMake online documentation appears to be comprehensive, it seems mostly intended as a reference and is thus rather difficult to use as a starting point, so I was hoping this book would provide more guidance. Unfortunately this is not what the book delivers.

While it comes in with 685 pages, the appendix starts at page 235 and from there on all you get is a printed version of the CMake manpages.

Furthermore, even the first 235 are low quality in almost every aspect. The illustrations are badly prepared and mostl pixelated and too big in comparison to the text. The text has not been proofread properly ("CMake is no longer case insensitive, so where you see COMMAND you could use command"). The contents are not structured nor particularly suited for learning CMake (why would I care about the class hierarchy of the CMake implementation?). Not even the syntax of the CMakeLists file is explained completely, e.g. the difference between whitespace and semicolors in variable definitions is unclear, and there seems to be a rather fuzzy distinction between "expanding" and "replacing" variables.

If you're looking for a printed copy of the onilne documentation this book may be what you're looking for. Otherwise skip it.

Poorly organized and overpriced

Yes, it is helping me learn some things about CMake. But for fifty bucks I expected better than this.

For the first few chapters I felt like I must be stupid or something. I'd follow along fine for a while then have to stop and back up just to sort out what was being presented. Then I got to this section about the installation command, and I realized it's not me, it's the dang book.It's not a particularly difficult command, but I had to read the first two pages about four times before I figured out how to parse what they were presenting. The section starts with 2-3 line summaries of the command's various signatures, then in the middle of the last one it launches into a description of the keywords that apply to all signatures, without even a paragraph break. Then suddenly it starts over with more complete descriptions of each signature -- no subhead or anything constituting a separation of the the summaries, keywords or expanded descriptions from each other. Just the most egregious example I can think of but there are others. The book is also poorly proofread, with a lot of distracting typos and missing words which wouldn't be a big a deal but again for a $50 book, I would expect better.

And as a previous reviewer mentioned, the bulk of the book is reference material that duplicates what can be found on the internet in a more up-to-date and easier to access form than in a big fat heavy book. They should have just printed the first 234 pages and sold it for 20 bucks.

Highly recommended

I'm not sure why this book is getting bad reviews. I loved the book. I was a beginner at cmake but advanced c/c++ programmer when I bought the book. I was using the online reference (which is great), but the book allows me to just fan through the pages. I read it while waiting on progress bars, or in my "white oval office" where I do most of my reading free from distraction. For me reading online or digital just isnt the same. So it's your call, if reading from a computer screen is your thing than skip the book...otherwise don't let all the negative reviews bother you. I also found the book more practically written with "use cases" where the online docs are "programmer reference".

P.S. I am a total convert, cmake is awesome!

Michelle Magly is a writer living in Alaska with her wife and fellow writer, Sy Itha. She has discovered that the frozen tundra makes excellent inspiration. Michelle has a short story, "Heart," featured in the 2012 Understory anthology from the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Michelle co-authored her first novel with Rae D. Magdon, All the Pretty Things in 2013. Their second novel, Dark Horizons was released February 2014. Chronicles of Osota - Warrior was released in July 2014. She is now working on the second book of the series Thief. Chronicles of Osota – Warrior and Dark Horizons were finalists in the 2014 Rainbow Award SciFi/Fantasy category. When not writing, Michelle hikes, snowboards, skis, and plays a lot of video games. Rae D. Magdon is a writer living and working in the state of Alaska. She has coauthored three books with Michelle Magly, All the Pretty Things and Dark Horizons. Starless Nights marks their third collaboration. The first book in the Amendyr series The Second Sister, was published in March 2014 and was soon followed with Wolf's Eyes published in August 2014. The third book of the series, The Witch's Daughter was released in April 2015. Wolf's Eyes and Dark Horizons were finalists in the 2014 Rainbow Awards SciFi/Fantasy category. As a huge fan of Rae Magdon (and a growing fan of Michelle Magly), I was not at all disappointed with their latest novel. Starless Nights was another captivating story that, I think, surpassed many of the boundaries in the first book and was an amazing sequel to continue off the series.
The end leaves us on the edge of our seats in another cliffhanger (just as the first one does), and will leave you wanting more. I absolutely cannot wait for the next part of their amazing series so I can find out how Taylor, Maia, and friends manage to survive the rest of their journey.

Loved this sequel!

Beautifully written, hugely impressive! Of course, the first book is necessary to understand the plot, but the story simply flows.

The familiar characters Taylor and Maia and their friends are getting their due development, new players are awesome, expanding the universe and the villains are powerful and exciting.

Looking forwards to the next (final?) book!

Kudos for this excellent little guide to ROS

This excellent little book is well worth a read, even for those who've been using ROS for some years. If you just do the ROS tutorials, you'll end up knowing 75% of what this book teaches, but you'll be missing the 25% that will really help you. And the online version is even free, at http://www.cse.sc.edu/~jokane. All you're paying for is the trees needed to give you something you can read anywhere or pull off your bookshelf.

The book fills in around the ROS tutorials by drawing from wiki pages on underlying commands like rossrv, the roslaunch xml page, and many others like them, and placing that knowledge in a cohesive framework that helps you understand why you should do things certain ways (e.g. why use relative or private names in launch file parameters, and why use groups), and highlights details easily glossed over in ROS documentation (e.g. rate-limited logging - ROS_INFO_STREAM_THROTTLE()). It covers all the core areas of ROS, but does not go into important libraries like tf. For that, try the more advanced ROS By Example ebook from Lulu.com, which picks up where the ROS tutorials leave off.

Kudos to Jason O'Kane for using his pedagogical skills to fulfill the mission of the "x for Dummies" series: "An introduction for beginners and a reference for the rest of us".

Big help in getting a start on the steep ROS learning curve

ROS is pretty much ~the~ development stack for robotics these days. Unfortunately, like many open-source projects, the documentation is a mess. Each new release seems to be largely incompatible with previous releases and modules, written as volunteer efforts, are often never moved forward and very infrequently well documented.

This book does a solid job of getting you up and running on the very steep learning curve that is ROS. After reading it, you'll be in much better shape to wade through the slosh-pit of the various ROS modules and distros.

While it may seem like a 'slim' book on a big topic, I found it far better than trying to wade through the disjointed and often inaccurate online 'tutorials'. He doesn't waste time with pointless asides and stays focused on moving the reader through the essentials. In other words, the short length is a blessing, not a curse !!

The title says it all. This book will take you from 0 to about a third of the way up the learning curve in easy to understand steps. After reading this book, you will have enough knowledge to understand the basics of ROS, and to start experimenting on creating your own node. You will also know the next steps required for additional proficiency in ROS.

In the past as a hobbyist robotictist, I have looked at ROS several times but was never able to get any traction. I think this book, may be the key for finally exploring ROS.

I feel like I've known Rick for decades

After reading Whistle in a Haystack, I feel like I've known Rick for decades. I've never met him but the book is written in a way that emphasizes life lessons that anyone can benefit from. I'm not an avid sports fan, and I particularly don't follow basketball but I do follow Dave Simon's blog and I wanted to read what he's been working on. My favorite part of the book is the "Lessons" section at the end of each chapter. The three or four key points worth remembering emphasize the wisdom that Rick shares from his career. You'll feel like you're on the court with Rick as his story unfolds and each chapter entices you towards the end of the final quarter.

Excellent read, especially during this time of year

Excellent read, especially during this time of year. With March Madness if full force all around us, Rick gives his readers a behind the scenes look of one of the greatest sporting events of the year. I enjoyed reading about his numerous interactions with coaches, players and other officials. The life lessons he teaches in this book have an Iowa feel and can be applied to anyone's life. I would highly recommend this book to any sports fan out there!

Lessons from Refereeing Basketball

The lessons at the end of each chapter can get repetitive. Good stories, very positive, but I'd like to see some more of the "bad guy" side of some of the coaches/referees. Lessons are valid for anyone, and apply to many different situations. Rick's story-telling is interesting and adequately illustrates his life lessons at the end of each chapter.

i liked this short bio on Princess Diana. It was to the point and told just enough detail to make it interesting. I found out things i didnt know, re-lived the things i did, and have a good deal more insight to the Royal family and how they think and act. I always admired Princess Diana and i thought she was wronged by the Royal Family alot from the way they acted at times. She really did care and was alot more Royal than Charles in my opinion. I think the author did a nice job with this story.

Now I understand why Diana touched so many lives along her short, but meaningful life. This is a great read however, please be aware that this isn't a full book rather a great synopsis of the "People's Princess". Mr. Crichton wrote a story that was considerate of the Princess' family yet told her story. I wasn't to sure if this book was going to be worth reading since so much has been written about Princess Diana but the story was told well and worked for me.

A quality book that complements clinical ABSITE questions

I bought this book to help review for the 2014 ABSITE which has now gone to a single format for all PGY residents (supposedly a 80/20 clinical to basic science ratio for the 300+ questions on the real test). Overall, I recommend this book. What this book does do well is that it highlights all of the most important aspect of the various organ systems and done in a format that can be reviewed prior to the test. I took about 2 weeks to go through this book, total time is about 10-20 hours to go through the entire book, obviously taking more time if it is your first time using it. Dividing each organ system chapter into a basic science and clinical section made reviewing certain topics in a full textbook much easier.

I thought the new chapters added to the end were not helpful; the real ABSITE basically tests a few medical ethics questions and these were not properly addressed by the new chapters added to the end. There are some questions that simply are not representative of real ABSITE clinical or basic science questions such as statistic questions ("What percentage of patients have complication x or disease y") There are a few typos, such as indicating that answer choice C is correct, but when you read the explanation, it is obvious that another answer choice (such as choice B) was the intended correct answer.

Questions are not new!

I was doing the questions on a website and then I bought this book, only to discover that they were the same questions. The explanations are cool, usually explaining the right and wrong options. Kindle edition is very cool because you can highlight and look among your notes what was highlighted.
