Five Minutes a Day for Your Well-Being

Oil pulling is very easy to perform. You can do it at any time without any special knowledge or preparation. All that you need is five minutes of your time. And whether you realize it or not, it will be time well spent.

Once Daily: Your Cure

Despite the simplicity of oil pulling, it’s good to follow the step-by-step procedure outlined below. Otherwise, small mistakes can slip in, which can detract from the success of your efforts.

The Best Time
In principle, one can use oil pulling at any time. Nevertheless, mornings, just after waking up, are generally the best time for it because many waste products, toxins, and impurities settle in our oral mucosa during the night. In the morning, these can be disposed of with one “sip” of oil.

Don’t drink coffee, juice, or even water before oil pulling. Any liquid that you swallow will wash a good portion of what you want to expel back into your body. When you enter your bathroom in the morning do the oil pulling before you put anything else into your mouth. In certain cases, such as persistent chronic illnesses and in order to speed up healing processes, one can also use this cure three times daily. Just as in the morning, it is important to do it before a meal.

To begin, place a spoonful of oil in your mouth. One full tablespoon is best. If this is too much, start with a teaspoon--but nothing less. From this amount, you can gradually work up to one tablespoon. The larger amount is better because it allows the full effects of oil pulling to develop. One teaspoon is enough for children older than six years.

Pull and Swish Vigorously
Sip the oil from a spoon. As soon as it is fully in the mouth, you need to keep the oil moving: suck it through your teeth, chew it, and swish it around in your mouth. This should occur in a leisurely fashion, without stress or strain. If you are stressed, you lose a large portion of oil pulling’s effectiveness.

Do not be surprised when the consistency of the oil changes in your mouth during oil pulling; that it becomes continuously thinner is dependent on it combining with saliva. The foamy mixture that slowly develops is completely normal and desirable.

Do Not Swallow
During oil pulling, always hold your head upright or, better yet, inclined forward. Absolutely avoid leaning your head back, as when gargling. By leaning back you risk swallowing some of the oil. This should be strictly avoided--you ultimately want to expel, not consume, the toxins that have bound themselves to the oil. But in case some of it goes down your throat, it’s nothing to worry about. You will not gain any new toxins. The toxins and waste products found in the swallowed mixture will reach the digestive tract and be transported back into the bloodstream from the small intestine. They can be disposed of during the next oil pulling session.

Away with the Toxins
Oil pulling should be performed for a duration of five minutes. When you spit it out, the oil should be milky white or at least pale yellow. If it is still yellow-green, the duration was too short. After spitting out the oil, rinse your mouth with warm water a few times. Finally, brush your teeth with a toothbrush as usual. It is frequently advised that the oil should be spat into the toilet bowl, because it is the usual repository for bodily waste. You can spit the oil into the sink as well. You should then quickly clean it, since the discarded fluid contains a multitude of toxins.

Duration of the Oil Pulling Cure
To truly realize a noticeable effect one needs to perform oil pulling daily for at least one week. It generally takes four to six weeks before the full effects of oil pulling can be seen and can have a positive impact on all levels. It is therefore useful to complete an oil pulling treatment for approximately six weeks during the early spring and fall. However, this does not mean that oil pulling should not be done daily. Many people who have done this for years swear by it.

Chronic illnesses, from which one has suffered for a long period of time, require more patience. Ultimately, long-term health problems cannot be cured from one day to the next--oil pulling cannot do that. During the treatment of chronic illnesses with oil pulling, it can sometimes take a year for full relief or healing to set in.

As a rule of thumb, the following signs show how long you need to carry out the oil pulling cure: You should be able to sleep well and have a good appetite. When you wake up in the morning you should feel rested and refreshed and your eyes should be free of “sand.” Keep up the oil pulling until you reach these benchmarks.

You Might Feel Worse at First
Immediately after starting oil pulling, a cleansing crisis can occur. You may experience deterioration in your current condition or worsening of the symptoms of an existing ailment. This should be seen as a positive sign. The initial and temporary deterioration shows that the detoxification process has begun in the body. This initial worsening is certainly not a reason for worry and should not lead you to stop the practice; on the contrary, the initial decline shows that you are on the right track.

Possible Temporary Ailments

When the detoxification gets underway and the body can finally rid itself of harmful contaminants, the following ailments sometimes occur on a temporary basis.

Fever
Joint pain or stiffness
Sore throat
Swollen lymph nodes
Slight flu symptoms
Digestion problems, such as constipation or diarrhea

Before trying the practice of oil pulling, I read two different books on the subject. This is one of them.

REVIEW: This book looks at oil pulling from the traditional Ayurvedic view. It talks about the origins of oil pulling and works from the belief that oil pulling actually pulls toxins from your body into your mouth as well as triggering digestive enzymes that boost the immune system. Frohn suggests as little as 5 minutes a day up to three times a day will make a major change in your health. Frohn encourages using the best quality virgin cold-pressed oils available and includes a list of the best oils to use.

THE NOT AS GOOD: If you are looking for science to back up this natural health method, you will not find it here. Plus, the final third of the book is taken up with other ways to boost your immune system including healthy eating and other natural detoxification techniques. I found this part of the book to be incongruous to the oil pulling information and often the author contradicted her own advice. This part of the book felt like a filler thrown in to make the book a little bit longer. The book would have been much stronger without it.

CONCLUSION: Birgit Frohn has her own method of how to complete oil pulling that differs a bit from others. This is why I read more than one book on the subject to get different views and to decide for myself what would work the best for me. This book is good if you are looking for how to do oil pulling rather than the reasons why oil pulling works. I recommend it for the oil pulling information only which includes when to pull, how to pull and what to expect. Does oil pulling work? I have been doing it for two weeks with a good quality oil and have already seen some major results in muscle and digestive relaxation as well as more energy during the day. I am beginning to feel much less sensitivity in my gums and teeth. But I think two weeks is too little of time to make a firm decision so I will keep at it a while longer. If nothing else, my jaw muscles are becoming much stronger from the daily swishing!

Good Book!

The Oil Pulling Miracle is all about how to use oils to help with your health. It has a detailed explanation on how to oil pull and for how you need to do it for. It also has a detailed guide on which oils work the best for different situations and a detox guide as well.

I found this book to be highly detailed of all the oils you can use to better yourself and get those toxins out of your system. I like books like this that have a simpler way of doing things instead of going to the doctor and getting drugs that might not work, when a little oil pulling might keep you from going to the doctor in the first place.

Nothing to substantiate the claims, can't recommend

While The Oil Pulling Miracle by Birgit Frohn gives a decent introduction to oil pulling, covering the steps and the various oils that can be used for this purpose, I didn't find many scientific references, and the last half of the book was filled with non-scientific detox methods without any kind of references.

About the Author
Andrew DeGraff attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and also teaches there. His clients include Kellogg's, Visa, Gap Kids, Bed Bath & Beyond, The New York Times, and The New York Observer. He now makes his home in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Daniel Harmon is a former staff writer for Brokelyn.com, an occasional essayist on the topic of Tommy Wiseau's film The Room, and the author of the book Super Pop! Pop Culture Top Ten Lists to Help You Win at Trivia, Survive in the Wild, and Make It Through the Holidays (2013).

Great books inspire intriguing maps

A great story inspires the imagination of the reader. In the mind of artist Andrew DeGraff, a great story inspires mapmaking. DeGraff’s conceptualization of story via mapmaking – as in the mythic structure of story as the hero’s journey – was what initially piqued my interest in this book. “Plotted: A Literary Atlas” contains maps of 19 classical works of literature that seemed to be chosen for what each reveals about humankind during the era in which it was written.

Like the literature these maps are based on, each map is a work of art full of brilliant colors, stark contrasts, and unforgettable images. The maps trace the characters’ journeys, be they Odysseus’ long way home to Ithaca or Hamlet’s descent into madness behind the castle walls of Elsinore. Not all of these are maps in the true sense of the word. Melville’s “Moby Dick” is illustrated with diagrams of the Pequod and the whale, while Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” comically depicts Vladimir and Estragon as empty conversation bubbles huddled in a reddish-orange void.

Because of the uniqueness of each map, it is impossible to pick favorites. But readers will likely discover an emotional connection to those maps created from their favorite stories. For me the cosmic map of L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time” comes eerily close to how I imagine the power of the tesseract enabled the Murry children to leap from one dimension to the next without the aid of a joystick. And Borges’ “The Library of Babel” map of exponentially expanding hexagons filled with bookshelves recalled my own fascination with libraries as a child.

What is most striking about these maps is how they not only portray the main elements of story -- setting, plot, characters, conflict and theme – but also the tone and mood, all of which is in keeping with DeGraff’s objective to depict the essence of what each story is about. And just as imagination draws readers into a good story, DeGraff’s maps, assisted by editor Daniel Harmon’s essays, lure readers into another literary dimension that is as challenging as it is satisfying. “Plotted: A Literary Atlas” opens an intriguing portal for readers to get lost in a good book.

Problem with Kindle edition

Unfortunately Kindle edition of this book has a bug (at least on iPad). The text pages are overlapped and only half of pictures is available. Somehow it fails to show the right part of the picture (throughout the whole book).

I had great plans for this book--I teach high school English

I had great plans for this book--I teach high school English, so I thought this would be a great visual aid for students as we read various classics. The pictures and print are very tiny, the colors are rather muted, and it's simply difficult to read through the maps. If it were printed on different paper with more vivid colors and a different font, I think this could be really cool.

And this is weird, but my copy of the book has a REALLY stiff spine. Most of the maps go across the two pages, and because of the stiff spine, it's almost impossible to really look at the middle part of the maps.

So, all in all, great idea; poor execution.

KIRT C. His research has appeared in a variety of academic and practitioner journals, including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Accounting Research, Financial Analysts Journal, Journal of Portfolio Management, Journal of International Money and Finance, and the Journal of International Business Studies, among others. Professor Butler's academic research has been profiled in the New York Times, Time, and Money magazines, and on the CNN and CNBC websites. He has a PhD in finance and also holds an MBA in finance from the College of Business, an MS in computer science from the College of Engineering, and a BA in psychology from the Honors College, all from Michigan State University.

Great, apart from the additional reading recomendations

A very thorough and interesting read. Butler is an excellent writer, and the text has very few grammatical and spelling errors. Explanations are clear, sources are typically given for further reference, and examples are almost always provided, and are very thorough as well. This book gives an introductory and then some to almost every area of multinational finance and investing. Be aware, this is not a book on international management practice, it is very much a book about currency conversion, hedging, international portfolios, etc. Although international corporate governance is touched upon, I would recommend something else if you want to learn about that area.

Why I gave it four stars: the additional readings. A textbook, especially an introductory one, is supposed to be a gateway to learn more about the topic. It is my pet peeve when authors include dozens of journals to read instead of books. The reason being is that it is mostly students reading these books. Students, if anyone isn't aware, are usually poor. They don't have money to be buying journal after journal. Give us something we can check out at our library, or at least find for a reasonable price at the bookstore. Recommending journals isn't helping anyone. There are some books recommended, but not many.

Other than that, I highly recommend professors adopting this textbook for an international finance class!

This is not a book on on "How to get laid" it is about becoming an authentic man who is a true lover of women and the beauty found in all of them.

Relationships NOT for Dummies

Tao Of The Gigolo is not the read I feared. It does not delve into a pseudo-academic psychoanalyses of the women who retain the services of male escorts, and it is not a "how to" for the aspiring gigolo. Tao is more of a philosophical discussion about relationships and given the word "relationship" and what constitutes romantic love carry different freight for different people; Tao offers more for those approaching it with intellectual and emotional curiosity. While written almost exclusively for men, the female reader who struggles with understanding and achieving a modicum of success with the male human stands to benefit from it. For men interested in mastering the art of manliness and seduction, Tao should be your bible. Those skimming the rich narrative in search of five bullet points to score a hook-up needn't bother.

BE CAREFUL WHAT VERSION YOU BUY!

Amazon has done us a huge disservice by lumping all the reviews for the various "original" versions of this book together. The version I purchased (black cover with money on the bottom, kindle version) is riddled with errors where the publisher evidently SCANNED the book in and then didn't bother to edit the results. Page numbers appear randomly in the middle of paragraphs, "m" appears where clearly "in" was intended and in some cases paragraphs just end in the middle of a sentence. This is a great book but some of the publishers have done a terrible job reproducing it and Amazon isn't helping by grouping very different copies together in the same review group.

I hope to update this review when I find a less crappy copy of this book, but avoid the version with the black cover with money on the bottom. (See pictures)

Finally! a clean and unabridged edition. I had to purchase two other editions before finding this one. it is clean and true to the original 1937 wording.

Great content but horrible format, see recommendation.

Yes this is the Original edition and is worthy of five stars for the content, there is no denying or disputing that. However, my beef is with the format of this version. I took a picture so you can see what i am referring to. The book could have been reduced to half it's size in volume and thickness due to the way the Napolean Hill foundation formatted this book. It is off centered where there is about an inch of blank space on top, 2 inches of blank space from left and bottom. The words go in too deep into the center of page and results in an awkward and annoying read. Taking these facts into consideration, you are basically getting a mass market paperback book. After a little more research i came across this edition: ISBN 1593302002. It is also the original edition from 1937 but also contains extensive footnotes, endnotes, appendices, and an index. It is a much better physical book overall in size and feel as well as better fonts, format, and quality of paper. I would recommend that version over this one.
Another issue is with the Kindle version of this edition by the Napoleon Hill foundation. Compared to any other e-book, the font is light with hardly any contrast whatsoever. Text is light gray instead of black which makes it very diffcult to read, you can see for yourself by sampling the book to your Kindle before purchasing which I recommend anyone do before making any e-book purchase. The Napoleon Hill foundation needs to fix this.
