About the Author

Lacy Mucklow (MA. ATR-BC, LPAT, LCPAT) is a registered, board certified, and licensed art therapist who has been practicing art therapy in the Washington, DC area since 1999. She has experience working with a variety of mental health populations and settings, including schools, home-based counseling, and hospitals with adolescents, families, and adults. Lacy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Studio Art from Oklahoma State University, and a Master of Arts degree in Art Therapy from The George Washington University.

Angela Porter is a self-taught artist who finds inspiration in nature, especially ammonite and other fossils. Much of her work is abstract with flowing lines, shapes, and colors that create textured and detailed artworks. She works with technical drawing pens, watercolors, inks, colored pencils, and metallic paints and pens. She lives in South Wales.

Fun and Varied Designs in a Portable Format – designs are printed on one side of non-perforated page

[[VIDEOID:7d09913203a833c8da0daa001a636746]]This is appears to be a Portable version of Color Me Happy by Lacy Mucklow and Angela Porter. I don't have the larger version as yet (but will be purchasing it in the future), so I can't confirm that 100% of the designs in this book are also in the larger book. However, I looked at images from the larger book and I do see that a number of those images are also present in this book. If you have the prior book and you are looking for something new, please watch my video to be able to make an informed decision as to whether this book will work for you. I count 70 designs if you include the half-finished designs at the beginning of five of the chapters (the first one is fully colored.) There are only 65 designs which are not colored at all.

It is a smaller sized book that is actually quite nice for taking on-the-go. The designs cover a wide range of subjects and are well printed for making coloring easy. There are many intricate and small details on these designs (perhaps from being sized down from the larger book), so I think that a steady hand and good eye are helpful when coloring in this book. The author and artist give information about coloring therapy and how colors effect us. There are also two colored samples at the beginning of each chapter. The last page of each chapter is a blank page in which we are encouraged to draw and color ourselves.

The six themed chapters in this book are: Nature, Animals and Babies, Music, Food and Drink, Whimsical Imagery, and Art and Architecture - which is at odds with those listed in the product description at the time I am writing this review (which are Mandalas, Water Scenes, Wooded Scenes, Geometric Patterns, Flora & Fauna, Natural Patterns, and Spirituality.) As the same description appears for Portable Color Me Calm, I suspect that an error was made and the description was duplicated. Hopefully, this will be corrected sooner than later. If so, my apologies but I don't seem able to edit my reviews once my photos are attached, so this warning will remain regardless of corrections to the product description.

The book is approximately 7.5 x 6 inches and is a full half inch thick. That makes for a tall book to color in but I found it doable if I positioned myself properly. I could not get the book to lay flat but as the designs were well away from the binding, I didn't have any problems getting into all corners for coloring.

The designs are actually printed on one side of the page. The reverse side has a colorful line design that is the same for each page of the chapter. I consider that to be a very pretty page for possible waste. The pages are not perforated. The binding is sewn rather than glued, so pages can be removed (a number at a time) by snipping the threads. Unless I want to frame or give a design away, I will probably not be cutting these. I will be using the book as a carry around coloring book and I don't want it cut in pieces.

All of my markers (both water and alcohol-based) bled through the page. My gel pens (Fiskars and Tek Writer) did not and didn't need more than average time to dry on the surface of the page. My various coloring pencils (both soft and hard leads) worked well on the paper. If you are using markers, you will need to protect the rest of the book from leaking ink as it went all the way through the page (even my trusty Staedler triplus fineliners.) I cut down a piece of chipboard to the size of the book and am keeping it in the book to carry around with me. That way, I can use whatever coloring medium I choose with it. I'm inclined towards ultra-fine markers and coloring pencils because of the small details.

l L0ve these coloring books, very nice and heavy pages, great to pencil or marker , my whole family loves these coloring books, we do own several!! Would definitely recommend this or any of the same brand coloring books!! Great and fun pictures!!

With Samantha Bond as Juliet, Derek Jacobi as Mercutio, and Judi Dench as Nurse, the play, which is set in 16th-century Verona, contains some of the most passionate dialog ever written. Great for Students

I am a student who had to read this book and I couldn't understand most of the stuff Shakespeare was writing. We first started to read some other books with the Old English type writing and I got a C- in this class because I couldnt understand it. We just started reading Romeo and Juliet and I had the same problem so I bought this book. Boy, did it help me! I got an A in my class! Another feature which I liked was how the layout is put side-by-side so if you have to read during class, you'll be able to know where everyone is and if you dont understand it, just go to the other side.

I am a high school English teacher looking at the different versions of classics texts available for Kindle (fire), so my review will not be for the play itself, but rather for the eBook--readability, layout, price, and other features.

This version of Romeo and Juliet is my favorite 99 cent version for several reasons. First, there are links to each act and scene. Next, the page layout is clean and easy to read with spaces between each speaker. Finally, the line formatting is in the correct iambic pentameter format, though there are no line numbers. There are no annotations or explanations, but none of the good 99 cent versions provide that either. Bottom line, easy to use!

I tend to enjoy mysteries and history

First let me say that this is not my typical reading fare, I tend to enjoy mysteries and history, but the snippets of Shakespeare I have read over the years have always fascinated me so I thought I would give one of his works a try. I can only say that I love this book, and find myself reading some passages aloud! For me, the annotation is sorely needed, but with it I don't find myself struggling like I remember doing with "Hamlet" 50 years ago in high school.

About the Author

Dawn Griffiths started life as a mathematician at a top UK university where she was awarded a First-Class Honours degree in Mathematics. She went on to pursue a career in software development, and has over 15 years experience working in the IT industry. Dawn has written several books, including Head First C, Head First Statistics and Head First 2D Geometry.

David Griffiths began programming at age 12, after being inspired by a documentary on the work of Seymour Papert. At age 15 he wrote an implementation of Papert's computer language LOGO. After studying Pure Mathematics at University, he began writing code for computers and magazine articles for humans and he is currently an agile coach with Exoftware in the UK, helping people to create simpler, more valuable software. He spends his free time traveling and time with his lovely wife, Dawn.

I would say that *for me* this one fits the best. I have completed Chapter 6

I have purchased close to half a dozen books for learning Android App development.
I would say that *for me* this one fits the best.

I have completed Chapter 6, and I could easily use it as an example to write a simple app for my local animal rescue by replacing drinks with pets. I did find the explanation on page 241 abou the OnItemClickListener to be puzzling. The authors writes that it is a nested class, but even Google's own documention says that it is an interface. I found the explanation at --- programmerinterview.com/index.php/java-questions/java-anonymous-class-example/ --- to be helpful.

I will be editing this review as I continue reading the rest of the book.

I skipped chapter 8 which teaches nested fragments and continued on to chapter 9 which develops a new app.

Because Google has switched over to Material as the new theme, the Action Bar icon pack is no longer available for download at the link mentioned on page 379 of the book.

I was able to find a download link that still worked.
Since Amazon won't let me put a link, I suggest Googling for Android_Design_Icons_20131106.zip

No matter what I did, the ic_action_new_event icon would not appear in the Action Bar.

I had to go to File --> Project Structure.
Then single-click on the entry 'app' in the left-side box under Modules.
Then in the larger middle box, single-click the Dependencies tab.
Then single-click on the entry that has the phrase 'appcompat'; my entire entry was com.android.support:appcompat-v7:21.0.3.
After that entry is highlighted, click on the red minus sign on the right-side box.

Android Studio automatically includes the Android Support Library v7 into a new project. Mine does. My Android Studio is 1.2.1.1

After you do this, take note of the last few paragraphs on page 378 in the book.

I found it wasn't necessary to remove com.android.support:appcompat-v7:21.0.3 from my project.
Make certain that all the items in menu_main.xml have android:showAsAction instead of app:showAsAction
Android Studio will draw red squiggly lines under each of them.
Ignore those red squiggly lines.
The app will run fine.

Great book. Highly recommended.

I'm almost finished with my second read of this new Head First book. It's an excellent introduction. Like the HF Design Patterns book, there is something about the detailed approach to conveying complex information that really does the job. It's engaging and progresses with those little steps, repeatedly, to drive home essential Android skills. I've been programming in Java for over a year, have taken four OOP courses, including Java, in college, and have read many books on Java and related topics. This works. It is not cartoonish by any means and a great first step; highly detailed, with arrows and explanations that leave no (beginner) stone unturned. Android programming is not that easy, to my surprise. But beware: you better know your Java.

Very good book for anyone who wants to learn Android development. As long as you already have a some experience working with Java this book is for you! It goes through a lot of things you wouldn't find in free resources found online. Each chapter of the book introduces a new project that is not only easy to follow along but also very helpful and relevant to the topic.

About the Author

Vilfredo Pareto�(1848-1923) was a pioneer in the field of econometrics, but gained fame, most of it posthumous, through his contributions to sociology and political science. Though often claimed by activist-rightist groups and a contributor to fascist thinking, he avoided alignment with any political movement.�

Hans L. Zetterberg was the founding director of the City University of Stockholm. Before that he was professor of sociology at Columbia University in New York. He is the author of Social Theory and Social Practice and is the subject of Sociological Endeavor, a festschriften. In addition his work has appeared in numerous publications, including Minerva, Acta Sociologica, andMarketing and Research Today.

The Eternal Return of the Elite

This monograph first saw the light of day in 1901 and has been understood as a somewhat famous attempt at a non race-based understanding of 'elitism'. The failure of this attempt to be either genuinely explanatory or entirely successful seems, by almost all accounts, to have been historically verified by fascisms repeated descent into racism. But, given the utter failure of the Fascist movements of the post World War II era to gain traction, one wonders if perhaps now Pareto can, at last, be given a fair hearing. One even wonders if Pareto is fairly characterized as a fascist.

Be that as it may, Pareto still might have much to teach us about the interactions of elites. According to Pareto, elites rise to power, maintain dominance, and then fall; but only if another elite is struggling to take its place. (One is here reminded of Lenin's remark against Trotsky, I believe, 'that no state ever fell without being pushed'.) History is, according to this text, a circulation of elites; and for Pareto, the ideologies that these elites represent are only of secondary importance. What one must always keep in mind while reading this book is that, for Pareto, Liberals and Socialists (that is, the leaders of these ideological positions) are equally elites. By the 'elite', I should point out, Pareto always means the leadership of a class.

Pareto distinguishes between subjective and objective factors; the latter being real objects while the former are psychological states. Thus belief and unbelief are, for Pareto, equally psychological states. In fact, according to our author, belief is often the sign of a rising elite. Note that by 'belief' he doesn't merely mean religious beliefs; according to Pareto socialism is a belief, that is, it is a psychological state. Indeed, for Pareto, perhaps somewhat surprisingly given his right-wing tendency and reputation, nationalism itself is also a belief. Now, he doesn't propose to ignore these beliefs; on the contrary, it is the skepticism of the rulers towards beliefs that weakens them in the face of the rising elite. These 'myths' are a part of history and need to be explained.

The 'religious sentiment' (i.e., belief) of the masses is what leads to revolt. This sentiment is exploited by the rising elite in its attempt to overthrow the ruling elite. (In this matter the 'skepticism' of the ruling elite is no small aid to the rising elite.) And what we also need to keep in mind is that logical argument almost always fails in these matters; people believe for non-rational reasons, sentiment must be met with sentiment, i.e. socialism must be countered with nationalism. In fact, in these pages Pareto, over a hundred years ago, by describing the similarity between Christian and Socialist behavior, seems to indicate the possibility of a convergence of Christianity and Socialism vis-�-vis the ruling bourgeois. This possibility is currently being explored, thanks to the collapse of 'really existing socialism' in the USSR, by the most au courant leftist continental theory.

Keep in mind that, for Pareto, it is the 'decadence' (i.e., it is 'less apt to defend its own power') and the unabated rapacity of the old elite that causes it to perish. Indeed, he says of this decadence and rapacity that the old elite "could prosper if one of them were absent." Scientifically, or so Pareto maintains, there really is nothing to choose between. Speaking of some historical examples of some crimes of new elites Pareto says, "The old elite, when it was in power, did even worse, so that one cannot conclude from these facts anything against one or the other regime..." Pareto simultaneously holds that reform is the most dangerous moment for the ruling elite, and that the waning of power is perfectly compatible with a rise in the use of violence. In fact, one comes away from this book feeling that the things that Pareto held in most contempt were inefficiency and incompetence and, indeed, some of his most contemptuous gestures in this matter are reserved for the capitalists.

In any case, the problem seems to be that the falling class, no longer believing in itself, can no longer attract the best young people to its cause. The rising class has 'belief' and hope, the falling one only has its privileges. Persecution seems to be no remedy for this. Indeed, thanks to persecutions, "many people of doubtful loyalty and unsteady character were eliminated and professional politicians kept away." ...Very amusing! But here, in 1901, Pareto sees the best of future generations going to socialism while all persecution does is prune the revolutionary plant.

In fact, if one carries away anything from this book it is that old elites must eventually fall. We learn here that socialism is the heir of Christian 'belief'. And since Christianity is dying, all the old elite can do is delay the inevitable 'homecoming' of the common people (and their 'religious sentiment') to socialism. Thus 'belief' replaces 'belief'. Again, there is little rationality in this process; Pareto is at pains to emphasize the 'subjective phenomenon'. This is why nationalism is the best answer to socialism; one counters one irrationality with another.

This book is really only a long essay, the hardcover edition before me has 75 pages of text, 18 pages of notes, and a 22 page introduction. The notes are quite good and should not be passed up. Four score and six years before George Michael sang that you “gotta have faith,” Vilfredo Pareto said basically the same thing in “The Rise and Fall of the Elites.”
Pareto doesn’t mean faith necessarily of the metaphysical church stripe. Faith/religion, as viewed by this sage of the Lausanne School of economics, is simply the ruling class believing in itself and continuing to use force to maintain its prerogatives. Once “religion” starts to wane with “humanitarianism” seeping in then the incumbent elite will be infiltrated and/or forced to accept new blood or replaced entirely.
Socialism was the religion gaining strength at the time the treatise was published (1901), especially in Italy and France where Pareto had his roots. The bourgeois elite was ripe for the kicking as detailed by Pareto and borne out by events surrounding World War II. “In Italy and Germany, where socialism demands sacrifices, the hypocrites stay away.” Consider that in reckoning the formation of the vanguard of fascist movements.
The turn-of the-century bourgeois elite has much in common with today’s bipartisan elite in Washington. At this hour and by leveraging Pareto, I forecast that the Democratic wing is more likely to remain largely intact thanks to its devotion to political correctness while the Republican wing appears poised to drop to fire-sale prices and be replaced by Mr. Trump’s associates. Time will tell.
Pareto introduced several novel ideas in his treatise including the realization that most actions are prompted by sentiments with people tying logic to them afterward. Impressive that someone as taken with the objectivity of mathematical economics could give subjectivity its rightful centrality but Pareto had/has tremendous range.
For another glimpse of that range note his “agreement” with Maffeo Pantaleoni on socialism in alternating objective and subjective lenses like an optician.
Pareto pioneered the idea that society is an equilibrium system, something which far too many people pay no attention. That’s likely a vote for gridlock although our author doesn’t explicitly say so. While considering how or whether to split your ticket, realize that “The Rise and Fall of the Elites” remains a powerful telescope for viewing our rulers and ourselves.

About the Author

Rick Graziani teaches computer science and computer networking courses at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California. Rick has worked and taught in the computer networking and information technology field for almost 30 years. Prior to teaching, Rick worked in IT for various companies including Santa Cruz Operation, Tandem Computers, and Lockheed Missiles and Space Corporation. He holds an M.A. in computer science and systems theory from California State University Monterey Bay. Rick also does consulting work for Cisco and other companies. When Rick is not working, he is most likely surfing. Rick is an avid surfer who enjoys longboarding at his favorite Santa Cruz surf breaks.

Allan Johnson entered the academic world in 1999 after 10 years as a business owner/operator to dedicate his efforts to his passion for teaching. He holds both an M.B.A. and an M.Ed. in occupational training and development. He is an information technology instructor at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 2003, Allan began to commit much of his time and energy to the CCNA Instructional Support Team, providing services to Networking Academy instructors worldwide and creating training materials. He now works full time for the Academy in Learning Systems Development.

4. in my opinion you need this book to study for the final exam because you wo'nt always have access to the net plus have all the packet tracer labs on CD is an even better backup.

need Packet Tracer

Another reviewer remarked negatively about the so-called poor quality of the paper in the book. I simply do not see this with my copy. The pages are high quality and quite reflective, without being actually glossy. In the printing business, there are grades of paper quality, and while I'm not in that field, the pages are certainly not low grade.

As to the actual contents on those pages :) -

It looks like comprehensive coverage. Remember that this is a Cisco produced book, for a Cisco certificate and where the hardware used is Cisco. So by definition, you are getting an authoritative reference for exam preparation. Unlike a third party offering [I don't know if these actually exist for this Cisco exam/certificate]. So to play it safe, if you are serious about getting the qualification, this text may be the best choice.

The book has many examples of how to configure and otherwise manage routing. Instead of merely passively reading the text, you should manually try all the examples. Well, to save you time, these have been included in the accompanying CD. Related to this is the single most important point in the book. You need the Packet Tracer simulator. This does not come with the book, which advises you to ask your instructor, who has to be part of the Cisco Networking Academies. If you are trying to learn the material strictly on your own, then this will be harder to assimilate, short of you having access to another simulator or an actual network where you have administrative permissions.

Having said that, a subsidiary role is possible for the book. If you already run a network, which might have Cisco hardware, and you need a solid reference on routing protocols, try using this. It explains the common protocols at a level deep enough and suitable for a network administrator. And of course, while the protocols are meant to be implemented the same way, regardless of vendor, when it comes to the diagnostic output from Cisco hardware, the book is relevant to what you should see.
