Chadbourne Chair in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Head of History of Art at the University College Cork, Ireland. He is the author of Pictures and Tears, How to Use Your Eyes, What Painting Is, The Strange Place of Religion in Contemporary Art, and Master Narratives and their Discontents, all published by Routledge; and Six Stories from the End of Representation, published by Stanford University Press.

Witty, amusing and slightly crazy!

I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. It almost made me want to have a similar adventure as I sat and laughed at the various situations in which the author found himself. Colorful and crazy living! A perfect example of how life transforms each one of us and how our response to the challenges thrown our way can make or break us.

Laughing Outloud: From Computer Geek to Pioneer

This book is funny! The author has the ability to laugh at himself and the foibles that transformed him from a computer geek in the Silicon Valley to an ill-equipped pioneer in the mountains in far northern California. But this is no Under the Tuscan Sun-romanticized version of dropping out and living a dream. Rather, it's a humorous look at rural mountain life and a truly uncommon cast of characters who pass through the author's early pioneer experience as he and his wife shed their designer labels for 21st century coonskin caps. For all the cubicle-bound baby boomers who fantasize about dropping out, this is a raucous look at the juncture where fantasy and reality collide. When this Marin County couple buys a ramshackle country cabin surrounded by trees, wildlife and colorful neighbors, they are barely prepared for what will come next. Filled with wacky characters and their equally wacky stories, it's just downright funny. But beneath the laughs lies a story of transitions. Call it a coming-of-age story for aging baby boomers who dream of taking one last stab at living out the fantasy of getting away from it all and starting over.

In these cynical and fearful times, this hilarious account of one man's attempt to break free from the bland shackles of corporate and social conformity and rebuild his world on a wild mountainside reminds us what our lives are for. Faced with a barely credible construction project, the endless dilemmas it churns up and a landscape populated by some very colorful characters, Edridge is variously emboldened and humbled as he seeks to understand, makes mistakes and gradually learns how to make a difference - to himself, to the horizon and to those around him. Edridge's insightful observation and wry, sideways humor enliven every chapter as his own struggles, and the bawdy and beautifully human pastimes of the people of Igo, are brought to life by a true story-telling talent.

About the Author

Dr. Allan A. Glatthorn (deceased) was a Distinguished Research Professor of Education (Emeritus) at East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina.

Dr. Floyd Boschee has an extensive background in teaching and educational administration. He served as a teacher, coach, and school administrator in the public schools and as a professor and chairman of departments of education at the collegiate level. Dr. Boschee is professor emeritus in the Division of Educational Administration, School of Education, at the University of South Dakota and a former school board member of the Vermillion School District, Vermillion, South Dakota. During his tenure as a university professor, he consulted with school districts on reorganization; published numerous articles in major educational journals; and conducted workshops on curriculum development and implementation, the teaching and learning process, and school administrator evaluations. He is the author or coauthor of 13 books in the fields of school administration and curriculum and instruction.

Dr. Bruce M. Whitehead is a NAESP Nationally Distinguished Principal and has served for over thirty years as a principal for School District # 4 in Missoula, Montana. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Montana. His career includes appointments to numerous national and international committees as well as becoming President of the Montana Association of Elementary School Principals and the Montana State Reading Association. He also served as Chairman of Montana’s first Governor’s Task Force on Technology as well as being an NCATE Advisor. As a co-author of 10 books and numerous articles in the field of education, Dr. Whitehead is a recipient of the University of Montana’s highest honor, The Montana Distinguished Alumni Award. Additional honors include: The International Reading Association’s Presidential Service Award, NASA Explorer Schools Leadership Award, National Milken Foundation’s Outstanding Educator Award, John F. Kennedy Center’s Award for Arts in Education, Outstanding Contributions to Saudi Arabian Education, and Japan’s International Soroban Institute Award.

Dr. Bonni F. Boschee is principal of the Volga Christian School, Volga, South Dakota. Prior to the principal position, she was a professor of language arts and also served as chair of the Graduate Program at Northern State University, Aberdeen, South Dakota. Dr. Boschee was also an elementary school teacher for 15 years in the Rapid City School District, Rapid City, South Dakota, where she was active in curriculum development and implementation and a K-12 administrator. Her research findings on homeschooling were presented at the state and national levels and published in a national journal. She currently is piloting a literacy program to enhance reading scores at Volga Christian School.

Curriculum Leadership is a great book for those entering administration. The knowledge and depth the authors show helped me tremendously in my first year of administration. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to understand the importance of administrators as curriculum leaders. Due to the common core, all administrators will need a strong background in curriculum and its development.

If you need page numbers this won't work...

I purchased the Kindle edition of this book and it was very difficult to use in class. The instructor for the course used the hardback edition and whenever she referred to a page number in her text, I had to ask a classmate what the page looked like or for a topic on the page so I could do a search within the ebook. Since the ebook uses strictly "location" markers it was not user friendly at all in regards to compatibility for use in conjunction with those using a traditional textbook.

A Landmark Book that is fascinating to read as well as devoid of romantic ideas of the east.

Finally a vast tome giving a more clear explanation of the differences between western and eastern psychological constructs that is devoid of the romanticism of Euro-Americans fascination.
This should be required reading in all American Universities Psych 101 courses as to show different models of self other than the American models that are being exported to other countries via American textbooks and Pharmaceuticals.

contributors scholarly & thinkfully argue that indigenous psychology requires each culture to be understood within its own frame of reference & also examined in terms of its own social & ecological context; the essential areas that cultural anthropologists do study & research cross-culturally as well.
The contributors also present deeply aspects of their own indigenous psychology, demonstrating the diversity & what I call wealth of psychoanthropological mind & knowledge and/or science to be obtained when attention is paid to the world indigenous research & study traditions. According to two of the book's contributors, "Indigenous psychology is an integral part of cross-cultural psychology. Whereas cultural psychology has taken the extreme stance that the essence of culture is unique in its symbols &significance so as to preclude meaningful comparisons between different cultures, the accepted definition of cross-cultural psychology includes two basic dimensions: Universal psychological phenomena across cultures & psychological phenomina specific to cultures."
At the moment, however, "Psychological Anthropology" is the most commonly used term for all of those different sorts of research into cultural variations in psychological processes. The basic question, as Karl Heider (2004)notes, "driving research in psychological anthropology can be formulated as follows: How does culture affect personality (or cognition, or perception, or emotion, or mental illness?)."

About the Author
Growing up in Chicago at a time when neighbourhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition, Richard T. Schaefer found himself increasingly intrigued by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighbourhoods and people’s jobs. His interest in social issues caused him to gravitate to sociology courses at Northwestern University, where he eventually received a BA in sociology.“Originally as an undergraduate I thought I would go on to law school and become a lawyer. But after taking a few sociology courses, I found myself wanting to learn more about what sociologists studied, and fascinated by the kinds of questions they raised.” This fascination led him to obtain his MA and PhD in sociology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Schaefer’s continuing interest in race relations led him to write his master’s thesis on the membership of the Ku Klux Klan and his doctoral thesis on racial prejudice and race relations in Great Britain.Dr. Schaefer went on to become a professor of sociology and now teaches at DePaul University in Chicago. In 2004 he was named to the Vincent DePaul professorship in recognition of his undergraduate teaching and scholarship. He has taught introductory sociology for over 35 years to students in colleges, adult education programs, nursing programs, and even a maximum-security prison. Dr. Schaefer’s love of teaching is apparent in his interaction with his students. “I find myself constantly learning from the students who are in my classes and from reading what they write. Their insights into the material we read or current events that we discuss often become part of future course material and sometimes even find their way into my writing.”Dr. Schaefer is author of the eleventh edition of Sociology (McGraw-Hill, 2008) and of the fourth edition of Sociology Matters (McGraw-Hill, 2009). He is also the author of Racial and Ethnic Groups, now in its eleventh edition, and Race and Ethnicity in the United States, fifth edition. Together with William Zellner, he co-authored the eighth edition of Extraordinary Groups, published by Worth in 2007. Dr. Schaefer served as the general editor of the three-volume Encyclopedia of Race, Ethnicity, and Society, published by Sage in 2008. His articles and book reviews have appeared in many journals, including American Journal of Sociology, Phylon: A Review of Race and Culture, Contemporary Sociology, Sociology and Social Research, Sociological Quarterly, and Teaching Sociology. He served as president of the Midwest SociologicalSociety in 1994–1995.Dr. Schaefer’s advice to students is to “look at the material and make connections to your own life and experiences. Sociology will make you a more attentive observer of how people in groups interact and function. Otherwise, the book itself is very informational, and I like the pictures. If you have the money to spare, I'd recommend renting or buying the actual material rather than an ebook.

I was waiting to get hold of this book for a while as I have been following the author's blog for a while and was always impressed with her narrative . Exit Interview is great weekend read & will keep you hooked throughout. The author showed prowess in her art by skillfully creating a storyline that merged reality with fiction . This novel has international appeal as it deals with real human emotions & experiences that we go through in our daily life. Overall , it's a great read & I highly recommend it.

Too much information that is not usable

There is too much information in this book that is way too technical or simply of no use to me. Here is a quote from the book: "With a spot meter, you can measure the log brightness range of the subject; you know that you need a log density range of around 1.1 to make a contact print on grade 2 paper: and armed with the film manufacturer's gamma/time cures, plus a good guess at the flare factor for your lens, you can select the appropriate development time."
The photographs in the book are average to the point that when looking at them I'm thinking, "I can do better than that."
The authors have a converstaional style in writing, and if you want ALOT of detail on exposure, maybe this is the book for you. There is 20 pages devoted to the chapter on film testing alone, a couple of paragraphs of which are devoted to describing the example negatives that are over/under exposed. The problem is, the negatives they are describing are in one of their other books! You would think that at 192 pages, they could at least include the examples they are refering to.
The key concept in the book is ". . .think hard about how you want a given tone to 'read' in the final picture, and adjust your metering technique accordingly."

Perfect for my needs

This is exactly the kind of photo book I've been looking for: lots of technical information on film characteristics, theory of density, printing, how lighting and filters affect exposure, technical details on the various kinds of light meters and what they're good for, etc., etc., etc. All too many photo books of this form factor are pablum. This book really gets into the guts of film exposure and all of the factors that affect it. If you want to go beyond the basics in understanding how film is exposed and such things as the difference in characteristics between slide and negative film, this is a great book.

Don't let the beautiful cover fool you, this book contains dreadfully complex, dry text that confuses rather than enlightens. Unless you are enticed by topics such as, "Interpreting the D/Log E Curve" or "Converting Log Density Ranges" there are easily better choices. If you're looking for clarity - whether novice or advanced photography skill - buy Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure." Its simplicity is effective and refreshing.

A useful encyclopedia of cost data - application for managment use could be improved

This book, and its previous editions, has long been a standby reference for building owners, facility managers, and architects and, to a lesser extent, contractors.

The base cost information is broad, extensive, and detailed. However, this base information must be adjusted for area of the country, building type, and project specific productivity influencing factors. Each of these adjusting factors is critical, and cumulatively the adjustment can be significantly large - over 100% of base costs. This is too broad a range of adjustment to permit utilizaion of the adjusted cost figures with confidence.

More attention to determination of these adjustment factors would increase the accuracy of the adjusted costs, and make this book more valuable.

I wouldn't waste my money in the campus bookstore! Most teachers will allow you to use an older version of the textbook they require. It's basically all the same info.
