The Devil's Defender: My Odyssey through American Criminal Justice from Ted Bundy to the Kandahar Massacre: Library Edition, by John Henry

In the tradition of bestselling legal memoirs from Johnnie Cochran, F. Lee Bailey, Gerry Spence, and Alan Dershowitz, John Henry Browne's The Devil's Defender recounts his tortuous education in what it means to be an advocate--and a human being. For the last four decades, Browne has defended the indefensible. From Facebook folk hero the "Barefoot Bandit" Colton Moore, to Benjamin Ng of the Wah Mee massacre and Kandahar massacre culprit Sergeant Robert Bales, Browne's unceasing advocacy and the daring to take on some of the most unwinnable cases--and nearly win them all--has led 48 Hours' Peter Van Sant to call him "the most famous lawyer in America." But although the Browne that America has come to know cuts a dashing and confident figure, he has forever been haunted by his job as counsel to Ted Bundy, the most infamous serial killer in American history.Browne, a drug- and alcohol-addicted yet wildly successful defense attorney who could never let go of the case that started it all, here asks himself the question others have asked him all along: Does defending evil make you evil too?

Review
“John is not only brilliant and thoughtful, he’s also a wonderfully entertaining writer. He’s a fine lawyer too, a storyteller with an artist’s sense of the drama in the pursuit of justice.” —Dustin Lance Black, Academy Award–winning screenwriter

“Even though I usually side with the prosecution’s case, I’ve been impressed with John Henry’s brilliance, charisma, and willingness to take on seemingly impossible challenges. His clients include some of the most publicized names in criminal law. What many people don’t know is Browne, the man. This memoir is beautifully written, unveiling his struggles with conscience, his years as a rock musician, and his interactions with Ted Bundy. Secrets about Bundy appear here for the first time—things that even I didn’t know about. A compelling tour de force!” —Ann Rule, NewYork Times bestselling author

“John Henry Browne’s career has included some of the most prominent and compelling criminal cases of our time. In this engaging page-turner he has done the public a real service in providing important behind-the-scenes details only known to him, along with his unique, incisive perspectives. Rare for books of this type, he is unflinching in his take on his (numerous) legal adversaries and equally on himself.” —Richard S. Adler, M.D., forensic and clinical psychiatrist

“John Henry Browne writes like a force of nature because he is one. The charismatic, polarizing rock-star defense lawyer has written an edge-of-your-seat account of his wonderfully strange life and exploits in and out of the courtroom, from babysitting Jimi Hendrix to defending the indefensible, including the likes of notorious serial killer Ted Bundy, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales (the soldier accused of murdering sixteen Afghan men, women and children in the so-called Kandahar Massacre), and Colton Harris-Moore (the “Barefoot Bandit”), among many, many others. What is most remarkable about The Devil’s Defender is not just that it reads like the thriller it actually is but also that what emerges after the smoke clears is a portrait of a genuine American hero, who believes above all else that everyone—no matter how apparently reprehensible—deserves the very best defense our legal system can offer.” —Matthew Carnahan, creator/showrunner, Showtime’s House of Lies

"A suprisingly personal look at the man behind the legal briefs." —Seattle Weekly

An important addition not only to the Bundy literature but also literature about criminal defense work
By Ann Marie Ackermann
I was totally enthralled by this book, but need to give a caveat: I used to practice law in Seattle. I even worked on one of the cases in this book and knew several of the people Browne writes about. I can't recall ever having had the pleasure of meeting the author, although I certainly knew of his existence. Nevertheless, reading about cases and people I used to know makes the book far more interesting to me than to the average reader, and in that sense, I might not be the most objective reviewer with respect to how exciting the book is.

But it is exciting!

At one level Browne writes like a true crime writer. He worked on some of Washington's most fascinating criminal cases and his memoir covers them: Ted Bundy, the Wah Mee massacre, the Wenatchee child molestation ring, the Barefoot Bandit, and the Kandahar massacre. At times when Browne uncovers fraud in the system and gets his client off, you will feel like cheering for him.

But the book goes deeper: At its heart is Browne's opposition to the death penalty -- how he developed his legal philosophy and how he implements it in the courtroom. And at times, Browne becomes very personal. His honesty about some of the less pleasant aspects of his life touched me.

The book's biggest bombshell? Without a doubt, Bundy's confessions to Browne. Browne offers the reader information about Bundy and his murders we didn't know about before. Sometimes Browne's account of Bundy's criminal exploits deviates from the known facts. For instance, other books claim that Bundy stole the jailor's clothing and stole his escape car in his second jailbreak, but Browne claims Bundy had an accomplice who provided the car and clothing. I wish Browne would have explained the deviation, e.g., was that the version Bundy told him? The lack of explanations about the deviations is my only complaint about the book.

All in all, well worth the read, and important addition not only to the Bundy literature but also literature about criminal defense work.

Bravo, Mr. Browne, and now I really regret not having had the chance to have met you in the courtroom!

A Must Read for 2016
By Erica Knight
I am currently a criminal justice graduate student and recently had a paper to write in my criminal sexual behaviors class which involved Bundy. (This is aside from other classes in which Bundy was discussed regularly).. After countless hours of interviews and Google searches I stumbled across this book. I immediately purchased, received it today and have read it all completely within a matter of a few hours.

Even though much of my interest was in regards to Bundy, wondering if questions I had would be answered, learning the life of Browne was captivating. He is much more than what the media portrayed and I enjoyed learning that about him.

I'm still left with more questions than before but am closing the book with much satisfaction. If you're reading this review and are contemplating the purchase, don't. Buy it now.

---Also, I must say I like the way the book was created, more particularly the text size. It wasn't so small that you strained to keep reading or keep your place.

I expected more
By Kindle 客户
For me the content doesn't fulfill what the title and subtitle and description seem to promise. Maybe I took the reviews too seriously and expected just too much. It's a quick read anyway. By the way the river between Hong Kong and Guangdong Province is not Yangtze River.
