About the Author
DAVID LILJA received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering , and a Fellow of the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He also serves as a member of the graduate faculties in Computer Science and Scientific Computation, and was the founding Director of Graduate Studies for Computer Engineering. He has served on the program committees of numerous conferences and as associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Computers. David is a Senior member of the IEEE and a member of the ACM.

SACHIN SAPATNEKAR received his PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Currently, he is the Robert and Marjorie Henle Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Minnesota, and serves on the graduate faculty in Computer Science and Engineering. He has served as Associate Editor for several IEEE journals, a distinguished visitor for the IEEE Computer Society and a distinguished lecturer for the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. He is a recipient of the NSF Career Award and the SRC Technical Excellence Award. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the ACM.

do not waste your money

The author claims that he covered in this book what other test books failed to do. He claims that this book can be used to design a processor from start to finish. Unfortunately I bought this book and was hoping to find a detailed explanation on how to design a mini processor. After reviewing the book, I concluded that this book is a waste of money and time. For example, the book talks too much about verilog basics but did not provide a block diagram or a top level for the VeSPA processor which is used in the book. For the money I paid I was expecting to find a useful example of a mini processor design.

Too incomplete.

Unfortunately, this book is more of an overview book. Don't expect to get any of the subjects presented fully explained. Some of the really important topics (like hazard detection) are only briefly mentioned. For the price it should have been at least twice as big and much more detailed.

Denise Alvarado was born and raised in the "Hoodoo Capital of the World," New Orleans, Louisiana. She is a ritual artist and independent researcher with a background in cultural anthropology and psychology and she has over 40 years experience in the conjure arts and mysticism. She is the author of several books, including the Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook and the Hoodoo Almanac 2012, coauthored with Carolina Dean and Alyne Pustanio. She is also the founder and Editor in Chief of Hoodoo and Conjure Magazine.

Good one-stop source

There are few complete sources for the history and use of the magickal poppet, or in the Hoodoo and Voodoo traditions - the Voodoo doll. The book provides the reader with a straight-forward historical backdrop to doll use in magick. There are black-and-white photographs of dolls from the African Diaspora, including some interesting ones from the author's private collection, which should inspire the reader. The latter half of the book focuses on how to make dolls, use them in ritual (including some common Hoodoo spells and hexes), common divinities associated with doll use and some oil recipes. I also like that there is a bibliography for additional references and a source page for supplies. This book is a worthy addition to any witch's or practitioner's library.

If you know anything about Voodoo...

... you do not need this book. And if you don't know anything about Voodoo, I can recommend numerous better books on the subject, including some of this author's source material, like Luisha Teish's great book "Jambalaya".

What I was looking for was a book about Voodoo dolls, preferably with a lot of good photographs. I wanted a book that talked a bit about construction, sure, but since each doll is totally personal even that wasn't as important to me as having a great resource about the dolls themselves, dolls used for similar purposes throughout the world, early and rare samples, and some color wouldn't have killed me. I also would have liked some good written discourse on the subject of dolls in ritual and history. Instead the photographs are limited, poorly lit, many are indistinct, and all of them are black and white. There is no discussion about the dolls pictured: what are they made of, for example. "Vintage" is not an exact term: what vintage is this doll approximately? What's the earliest American Voodoo doll? How about these rare dolls briefly mentioned-- Devil Baby Dolls, for example, any of them still around? I get nothing from this book on these subjects.

Another technical beef I have is with the editing, and this may not be the author's fault, but there were glaring grammatical errors throughout the text.

But most of all, seriously, the world does not need another book masquerading as something authentic while really being just a Neo Pagan Magick 101 book. There are a gajillion of those on the market already. All of them are repetitious, inaccurate, not historically correct, and all of them have been written to death. Throwing a "Voodoo" slant on the same droning tale about "three times three" and "hexing is bad" and blah blah blah? First, that's not actual Witchcraft, and second, that's not actual VOODOO. Hello! Since when does this white-light don't harm your enemies revenge is bad nonsense come into a folk religion like Voodoo? Since all of a sudden in the 1980s, that's when, and not by actual practioners of the actual religion either. I've had a lot of truck with Voodoo and Witchcraft over the years, and the people who practice the real thing, believe me, laugh about this "three times three". That idea came into the New Agey modern Wiccan Neo Pagan thought process from a poorly written poem from the 1960's, not from anything old or authentic. If we are going to discuss old religions-- and Voodoo, while a fairly new amalgamation religion originating in the Americas, has its roots deep in both ancient African and ancient European practices-- let's quit being so disrespectful as to pull the teeth out of them.

I have no doubt some of this white lighty stuff is habit, like a kind of legal disclaimer-- that's unacceptable to me. I know there are some very good practioners who have, maybe from their own personal fears, maybe from their own personal sense of morality and looking for a way to explain that morality, embraced the "three times three" ideology-- but that needs to be made distinct from the actual religious practice that is purportedly being written about. It's also possible some practioners are purposely obscuring the truth with this nonsense, though if you are going to take the time to write a book about a serious subject (and complain throughout said book about how Hollywood has demonized something), then I have little sympathy for that ploy. While I wasn't looking to this book for advice on the practice of magick of any sort, since I already have good sources for that, I do resent coming across this misinformation Yet Again, and in a book with a subject that really could have been SO good. I mean someone out there needs to collect THE definitive information on these dolls, because it's fascinating in and of itself.

I'm returning this book, which is something I've never done before. That's how disappointed I am in it. This book did nothing to add to the repertoire of knowledge on the subject, or on the subject of Hoodoo, or Voodoo, or ritual magick.

Interesting Book but made up historic facts

Not a historian. One of my pet peeves is when people communicate wrong history in Nawlins. I understand Denise Alvarado writes plenty of books and her success is mostly due to the demand on Nawlins or Louisiana Voodoo heritage being way more than the books that are being written and distributed. The best publications on Voodoo aren't even published. The best history books on Louisiana aren't even published mostly due to a movement by the Government to hide Creole history from America, being that having a class of people of color, that lived on the same or almost the same status as whites during slavery takes away from the American Narrative.
Alvarado states that in 1804, Napoleon invaded Cuba, driving out Hispanics from Cuba into Nawlins and this is how Voodoo came about in the city. That's simply untrue. Creoles were always in Louisiana since the founding of the state and Africans were being imported up the Mississippi River from the Congo and Angola, so Africans were already there and being allowed to worship on Sundays in Nawlins Congo Square. Now, where Creole Voodoo came in, was during the Haitian Black Slave Revolt, which didn't just drive out the white French Creole but a huge population of mixed race or mulattoe Creoles, who fled into Nawlins, during the late 1700's to the mid 1800's. In the entire French Quarter of Nawlins, during the 1800's there was only one Cuban Creole businessman who owned a cigar shop. The mixed race Creoles of middle class status, who monopolized the commerce, publications and businesses were the keepers of Creole Voodoo and not the one of two that came from Cuba. So Creole Voodoo in Nawlins predates her 1804 starting point.
Spain and Spanish heritage is not a huge part of Nawlins except for some of the architecture but many Creoles of Color from Cajun Country or Lower South West La. State keep trying to make Louisiana some Spanish colony when it was dominated by the French (99.9%)-so saying that Cubans ushered in Creole Voodoo couldn't be further from the truth. And just to be real about it, Voodoo dolls aren't really a staple to La. Voodoo but more of a creation of whites and Hollywood. I know plenty of people who practice Voodoo, like almost all of my ancestors, and dolls are definitely over hyped up but she is selling a book even though many of her attempts to lay out the history of dolls in Voodoo are shaky and her history on the practice of Voodoo isn't well connected to any legit history.
You can use dolls but Voodoo stems from the practice of ancestor worship, which predates ancient Egypt and goes back to Cush or Ethiopia, which had an empire that stretched into the Southern U.S.-which many Creoles are of Choctaw or Cherokee mixed, herbal remedies and conjuring of spirits that one can learn to control and even keep. Being from South of Nawlins, in a Parish that has been destroyed by Oil Companies (BP)-Bush/Obama and the U.S. Army Corp, all of the Creoles did Voodoo and I can even recall shape-shifting rituals but of course I didn't write any of this down-YET!
But none the less, dolls can be used in Voodoo and in fact, I have seen people die from the use of dolls but this is due to how Voodoo works, which means that it is a religion and not a craft, so just anyone casting a Voodoo Spell will not work. I am almost of the mind that it is genetic being that more Creoles and Blacks in the "New World" are in daily contact with spirits and that includes blacks from Ricans, to Cubans, Creoles in La., Creoles in Haiti to Brazil and the Dominican Republic.
Bu one thing that she is kinda shading light on, is the coded and double meaning of biblical Psalms. Most people do not know this but the Bible is only a re-copy of another re-copy or yet another re-copy going back through the Jews, to Southern Iraq aka Babylon, to Egypt to Ethiopa or Cush. Biblical Psalms are nothing but very powerful African Spells, that pre-dates Hebrew and Aramaic. She doesn't really have the chops to really lay out Voodoo, so that the average person can understand how and why Voodoo is a religion and not a craft but I am 100% sure that she is a student of Wicca because she uses alot of examples from Europe Wicca or Witchcraft, found in any pubic library, and makes an attempt to lay out the roots of Voodoo but she knows nothing beyond than any lay person who has been interested in the subject and read a few books, here and there.
So due to her use of this I changed my review from a four to a five because this book is a good one and authentic, for the most part but still a tease for many people-who want the Voodoo Bible which has yet to be written

The Xtanian's themselves are stunningly human-like, but their customs are completely alien to Earth culture. In the Xtianian society, women are rare and therefore the men are of little value beyond what they provide for the comfort and safety of their 'queens'. And the queens have harems. Rating: Contains graphic sex, explicit language, profanity, some violence, group sex, and some material that could be offensive to sensitive readers.

SURPRISE!! This was FANTASTIC!!

NO SPOILERS or plot summaries. Recommendations included.

HIGH LEVEL: This is a stand-alone futuristic sci-fi romance/erotica, but it's SO GOOD you will WISH there was a whole series. This was the first of Ms. O'Connor's books that I have read and you can bet your behind I'm going to read the rest of her books. Though, maybe this wasn't the best place to start because I don't expect everything to be this good! The plot description sounded so silly, I expected this book to be pretty bad, but maybe funny. I was SO INCREDIBLY WRONG.

PLOT: I thought it was an intriguing concept. I also thought it would be corny and ridiculous. It was NOT. It was actually handled very well. It was well thought out, well-paced, and the sex didn't over power the story. There were a number of surprisingly thoughtful conflicts. The culture clashes were tense and hilarious. Some laugh out loud moments and some that just made your heart break. Everything wasn't completely resolved by the end from a meta-plot standpoint. I can't tell you how badly I would like to see them continue to build this new culture. The only drawback was how FAST the end was resolved. I really wish this had been drawn out and explored more.

SEX: Imagine what sex would be like in a room full of men who all wanted you, but some weren't allowed. Intriguing, right? It was erotic, but it never got out of control, fog up the windows steamy. More of an explicit anthropological study of sex, than a lusty read. Don't get me wrong- it was exciting, but I didn't find myself hot and bothered constantly as with some other reads. There were some hot moments, but the pleasure of this book came from the story and the relationships between the characters. The only "alien" issues were cultural, not biological, so there was no crazy sex with oddly shaped aliens. The men were MEN. There was voyeurism, orgy, oral and vanilla sex. No anal, BSDM, fetishism, or M/M. I was actually a little surprised that there was also no F/F. Call me crazy, but hundreds of women on a ship for 15 years and they don't start to play with each other? Unlikely.

CHARACTERS: Characters felt real- imperfect, but well rounded. Eden makes a great leader, though she tended to be a little unrealistically emotional. The alien men were so sweet I wanted to just hug them! I wished there was a little more written from their perspective. We get a little of Baen, but only enough to make you fall head over heels in love with him. The characters were fun, I just wish there was more time spent with them.

BOTTOM LINE: I LOVED THIS BOOK. I can't stop thinking about it and wish I could convince Ms. O'Connor to write more about this world. The end was rushed and it wasn't perfect, but it was an insane amount of fun anyway! ENJOY!

RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Anne Aguirre's Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, Book 1)- a techie space borne sci-fi series with a strong female lead and a healthy splash of unconventional romance- NOT actually romance/erotica, though. More sci-fi.
2. Marie Harte's A Scorching Seduction - sci-fi erotica that's both absurdly amusing and very sexy. NOTE: This is a short story, not a full novel.
3. Linnea Sinclair's An Accidental Goddess (Bantam Spectra) - lightly magical sci-fi romance
4. Linnea Sinclair's Games of Command - another sci-fi romance with political intrigue, psychic predators against a spunky captain and her very sexy, but emotionally challenged biocybe admiral.
5. Linnea Sinclair's Gabriel's Ghost - another sci-fi romance with political intrigue, hostile aliens and a very sexy, very dangerous telepath
6. Nalini Singh's Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changelings, Book 1) - romance series which features weres and psychics, but also carries plotlines with some substance
7. The "Wastelands" series which is futuristic fantasy erotica, written by 4 authors, which begins with Wasteland: The Wanderer and then moves through: The Whore, The Breeder and The Priestess.

Alien SciFi Romance with a Lot of Internal Dialogue, some Hot Sex and Interesting World Build & No Rape scenes

I enjoyed this alien sci-fi romance. As some have noted - Ms O'Connor's books have a lot of internal dialogue in lieu of action - its interesting if the world build is interesting but can plod along at times. There's very little hero perspective in her books - some but not much. I like more. This book fit the pattern. When there were sex scenes they were more erotica-oriented. However, they were good & free of rape (which too many of her books have.) Relationship building occurred on a lower level than a true romance - more effort was devoted to the sci-fi issues & philosophy of such.

I liked the world build - it made sense largely. I wanted to scream out BEES! How could they miss something so obvious? I imagine bees died out in their world long ago; without biological or naturalistic history buffs the Bee social structure wouldn't be known?

I agreed with others too who said the ending was rushed - all this decision build up then whoosh - not much of anything. Glad for the Epilogue though. However the issues with the brood to female ratio shortage wasn't addressed. Maybe she'd planned a followup book?

Everything I wanted in a sci-fi erotic romance.

This book was so much fun to read, and offered all the things I look for in a sic-fi erotic romance!

The plot is fascinating and very original. The storyline is so fresh and imaginative that I couldn't put the book down, I was so curious how the situations would be handled. And it was truly a sci-fi story -- as in outer space, rather than the ubiquitous vampires, shifters, and other paranormal stuff that gets thrown together under the sci-fi genre.

The writing is sophisticated and intelligent, which I greatly appreciate. Oddly, there are also missing words and wrong words ("one's" where it should be "ones.") here and there, but this is so common in e-books and, within articulate narrative such as this, makes me doubt that the writer doesn't know the difference. The errors weren't enough to pull me from the story, however.

The heroine and her colleagues are strong, independent, professional women with the same needs and vulnerabilities that all women share, and this makes them believable characters.

The hero is somewhat innocent due to his society's cultural mores and his unfamiliarity with Earth culture. At the same time, he is mysterious, strong, sensitive, intelligent and highly observant. A very loveable lead. In addition, the inevitable cultural differences lead to some laugh-out-loud moments.

The steamy scenes are a lonely woman's wet dreams, lol. It's hetero polyamorous sex -- all for one (for her), and one for all! No M/M, BDSM or anal.

Not everything is explained in this short book, which makes me wonder if there is, or is planned, a sequel. I'll be reading more from this author.

Algorithms in C is a comprehensive repository of algorithms, complete with code. If you're in a pinch and need to code something up fast, this book is the place to look. Starting with basic data structures, Algorithms in C covers an enormous scope of information, with extensive treatment of searching and advanced data structures, sorting, string processing, computational geometry, graph problems, and mathematical algorithms. Although the manual often neglects to provide rigorous analysis, the text surrounding the algorithms provides clear and relevant insight into why the algorithms work.

This book is intended to survey the most important computeralgorithms in use today and to teach fundamental techniques tothe growing number of people in need of knowing them. It can beused as a textbook for a second, third, for fourth course incomputer science, after students have acquired some programmingskills and familiarity with computer systems, but before theyhave taken specialized courses in advanced areas of computerscience or computer applications. Additionally, the book may beuseful for self-study or as a reference for those engaged in thedevelopment of computer systems or applications programs, sinceit contains a number of implementations of useful algorithms anddetailed information on their performance characteristics. Thebroad perspective taken in the book makes it an appropriateintroduction to the field.

SCOPE

The book contains 45 chapters grouped into 8 major parts: fundamentals, sorting, searching, string processing, geometricalgorithms, graph algorithms, mathematical algorithms andadvanced topics. A major goal in developing this book has beento bring together the fundamental methods from these diverseareas, in order to provide access to the best methods known forsolving problems by computer. Some of the chapters giveintroductory treatments of advanced material. It is hoped thatthe descriptions here can give readers some understanding of thebasic properties of fundamental algorithms ranging from priorityqueues and hashing to simplex and the fast Fourier transform.

One or two previous courses in computer science or equivalentprogramming experience are recommended for a reader to be able toappreciate the material in this book: one course in programmingin a high-level language such as C or Pascal, and perhaps anothercourse which teaches fundamental concepts of programming systems. This book is thus intended for anyone conversant with a modernprogramming language and with the basic features of moderncomputer systems. References that might help fill in gaps inone's background are suggested in the text.

Most of the mathematical material supporting the analytic resultsis self contained (or labeled as "beyond the scope" of thisbook), so little specific preparation in mathematics is requiredfor the bulk of the book, though a certain amount ofmathematical maturity is definitely helpful. A number of thelater chapters deal with algorithms related to more advancedmathematical material--these are intended to place the algorithmsin context with other methods throughout the book, not to teachthe mathematical material. Thus the discussion of advancedmathematical concepts is brief, general, and descriptive.

USE IN THE CURRICULUM

There is a great deal of flexibility in how the material here canbe taught. To a large extent, the individual chapters in thebook can be read independently of the others, though in somecases, algorithms in one chapter make use of methods from aprevious chapter. The material can be adapted for use forvarious courses by selecting perhaps 25 or 30 of the 45 chapters,according to the taste of the instructor and the preparation ofthe students.

The book begins with an introductory section on data structuresand the design and analysis of algorithms. This sets the tonefor the rest of the book and provides a framework within whichmore advanced algorithms are treated. Some readers may skip orskim this section; others may learn the basics there.

An elementary course on "data structures and algorithms" mightomit some ofthe mathematical algorithms and some of the advancedtopics, then emphasize how various data structures are used inthe implementations. An intermediate course on "design andanalysis of algorithms" might omit some of the more practicallyoriented sections, then emphasize the identification and study ofthe ways in which algorithms achieve good asymptotic performance. A course on "software tools" might omit the mathematical andalgorithmic material, then emphasize how to integrate theimplementations given here into large programs or systems. Acourse on "algorithms" might take a survey approach and introduceconcepts from all these areas.

Some instructors may wish to add supplementary material to thecourses described above to reflect their particular orientation. For "data structures and algorithms", extra material on basicdata structures could be taught; for "design and analysis ofalgorithms," more mathematical analysis could be added; and for"software tools," software engineering techniques could becovered in more depth. In this book, attention is paid to allthese areas, but the emphasis is on the algorithms themselves.

Earlier versions of this book have been used in recent years atscores of colleges and universities around the country as a textfor the second or third course in computer science and assupplemental reading for other courses. At Princeton, ourexperience has been that the breadth of coverage of material inthis book provides our majors with an introduction to computerscience that can later be expanded upon in later courses onanalysis of algorithms, systems programming and theoreticalcomputer science, while at the same time providing all thestudents with a large set of techniques that they can immediatelyput to good use.

There are 450 exercises, ten following each chapter, thatgenerally divide into two types. Most are intended to teststudents' understanding of material in the text, and ask studentsto work through an example or apply concepts described in thetext. A few of them, however, involve implementing and puttingtogether some of the algorithms, perhaps running empiricalstudies to compare algorithms and to learn their properties.

ALGORITHMS OF PRACTICAL USE

The orientation of the book is toward algorithms likely to be ofpractical use. The emphasis is on teaching students the tools oftheir trade to the point that they can confidently implement, runand debug useful algorithms. Full implementations of the methodsdiscussed are included in the text, along with descriptions ofthe operations of these programs on a consistent set of examples. Indeed, as discussed in the epilog, hundreds of figures areincluded in the book that have been created by the algorithmsthemselves. Many algorithms are brought to light on an intuitivelevel throughout the visual dimension provided by these figures.

Characteristics of the algorithms and situations in which theymight be useful are discussed in detail. Though not emphasized,connections to the analysis of algorithms and theoreticalcomputer science are not ignored. When appropriate, empiricaland analytic results are discussed to illustrate why certainalgorithms are preferred. When interesting, the relationship ofthe practical algorithms being discussed to purely theoreticalresults is described. Specific information on performancecharacteristics of algorithms is encapsulated throughout the"properties," important facts about the algorithms that deservefurther study.

While there is little direct treatment of specific uses of thealgorithms in science and engineering applications, the potentialfor such use is mentioned when appropriate. Our experience hasbeen that when students learn good algorithms in a computerscience context early in their education, they are able to applythem to solve problems when warranted later on.

PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE

The programming language used throughout the book is C (a Pascalversion of the book is also available). Any particular languagehas advantages and disadvantages; we use C because it is widelyavailable and provides the features needed for ourimplementations. The programs can easily be translated to othermodern programming languages, since relatively few C constructsare used. Indeed, many of the programs have been translated fromPascal and other languages, though we try to use standard Cidioms when appropriate.

Some of the programs can be simplified by using more advancedlanguage features, but this is true less often than one mightthink. Although language features are discussed whenappropriate, this book is not intended to be a reference work onC programming. When forced to make a choice, we concentrate onthe algorithms, not implementation details.

A goal of this book is to present the algorithms in as simple anddirect a form as possible. The programs are intended to be readnot by themselves, but as part of the surrounding text. Thisstyle was chosen as an alternative, for example, to having inlinecomments. the style is consistent whenever possible, so thatprograms that are similar look similar.

Great for Algorithms, perhaps not for C++ implementations

This is easily one of the leading texts on data structures and algorithms - a third edition has already been released (however, that is practically a new book ,so read on :-)...). Sedgewick is a student of the great Donald Knuth, and a leading researcher and authority in the field of Algorithmics.
'Pound for pound', this might be as good as Cormen et al's classic, which is the undisputed leader among introductory books on algorithms. However, this has two advantages over that book :
(1)Size : Weighing in at a lean 656 pages, this is almost 40% smaller than Cormen's classic, while providing approximately the same breadth. However, Cormen has the edge in depth, especially rigorous analysis of algorithms' performance.
(2)'Real' code : This book has code snippets in C++, as opposed to Cormen which has it in pseudocode.However, the code is far from 'ready to run' - it's just enough to give you an idea how to go about building your own code.
Another plus point is short and crisp chapters which can be easily 'digested' - average chapter size is only about 14 pages.
This book really covers a lot of topics - sorting, searching, parsing, computational geometry, graphs, fast fourier transforms, mathematical algorithms and much,much more.
It is written in a very readable style, and the illustrations are a big help, perhaps the best in a book of this kind. It would've benefitted from a few more exercises, brief solutions, and a little more rigour in performance analysis.
The code is excellent at one level, but it's actually excellent C code masquerading as C++ code, i believe.
If you have no problem with C, you should perhaps go for the C version of this book - the C code is reminiscent of Kernighan & Ritchie. Beautiful, elegant C code !!
If it's good C++ code that you're after, perhaps Mark Allen Weiss's book or Heileman's book might be a better choice. Also, the new (3rd) edition of this book has much better C++ code.
If you want more depth and rigour, and are willing to work a little harder, then Cormen's the way to go.
However, if you want a bit of everything in one compact book, then this is the best choice.
(Sedgewick's come up with a recent revision, but it's spread over several volumes - not sure whether that's a better choice, however the C++ code seems much better in that, with C++ consultancy by Chris Van Wyk, another student of the great Don Knuth)

Attention : These are NOT reviews for part 5

Just wanted to let everyone know that the reviews here (till 6th March
2002 at any rate) are not of the book 'Algorithms in C++ part 5
graph algorithms' by Robert Sedgewick, but of the earlier edition of
his book on algorithms.
To get an idea of the book it's supposed to be about, please refer to
the review(s) on 'Algorithms in C part 5 graph algorithms', which i
expect to identical but for the code.
It'd be surprising indeed if the book isn't substantially better than
the reviews for the earlier book indicate ..........
The first volume, ie parts 1-4 are excellent - please refer to the
reviews on that, they're for the current edition :-)

Good content but hard to read

I'm a learned industrial engineer in electronics but got into informatics right after my degree. So I never had a course on algorithmic and had to learn nearly everything by myself.
After some years of working in the field, I tought it was maybe time to get some background on the subject so I got this (now an outdated edition) of the book.
Well, it was the book it took the longest to me to finish in the informatics field.
The book explains a whole bunch of basic and more advanced general-purpose algorithms, and so has a good coverrage of the subject.
However, there are two problems with the book:
1) The coding style is very bad: the author likes to use global variables, and variable names are often very cryptic. Example:
* p = parent
* g = grandparent
* gg = greatgrandparent
* c = child
* x = current node
* y = temporary node
...
2) You cannot read this book's chapters in a random way: you have to follow the chapter ordering, because often knowledge of later chapters is based of knowledge of earlier chapters, and, because of the bad coding style you have to often remember the meaning of the cryptic variable names several chapters later when they are reused. If you're like me, you've forgotten the meaning, which means reread that damn chapter, which in turn can again be based on an earlier chapter. You get the picture why it took me so long?
