The Art of Chemistry: Myths, Medicines, and Materials, by Arthur Greenberg

A fascinating collection of the pictures, figures, and diagrams that chemists create to explain their craft

In A Chemical History Tour, Arthur Greenberg took readers on a wild romp through the history of chemistry, introducing the unique characters, sometimes bizarre theories, and novel experiments that ultimately produced the modern science. Now Greenberg returns with more tales of chemistry glory, lovingly chronicling the extraordinary artwork that alchemists and chemists have produced in their pursuit of understanding the nature of matter in The Art of Chemistry: Myths, Medicines, and Materials.

The Art of Chemistry employs 187 figures (including 16 full-color plates) to illuminate 72 essays on the mythical origins, wondrous experiments, and adventurous explorers in the annals of chemistry. Greenberg divides his delightful study into eight sections:

  • Spiritual and Mythological Roots
  • Stills, Cupels, and Weapons
  • Medicines, Purges, and Ointments
  • An Emerging Science
  • Two Revolutions in France
  • A Young Country and a Young Theory
  • Specialization and Systemization
  • Some Fun
Each section tracks chemistry's incremental progress from myth to modern science, featuring the figures and diagrams that early chemists used to explain their craft. Along the way, readers will meet the deadly basilisk and the fabulous phoenix that populated the lore of pre-modern chemistry, learn the contributions to chemistry of the American natural philosopher Benjamin Franklin, and encounter Antoine Lavoisier, the father of modern chemistry and perhaps France's greatest economist.

Greenberg also examines our fundamental connections with science through two personal essays, one on an adolescent friend who improbably (but perhaps inevitably) became a world-renowned entomology professor and the other on his quest to discover his own chemical heritage. The Art of Chemistry is sure to inform and entertain anyone interested in our eternal quest to know the natural world.

An informed and informative history which is superbly illustrated with 187 figures (including 16 full-color plates), The Art Of Chemistry is a truly fascinating survey and inquiry into the origins of a science that has substantially contributed throughout the years toward human advancement and civilization. More Laughs---Chemical Heritage magazine
By A Customer
Colin Russell once made a television film for the UK's Open University in which he demonstrated some of Edward Frankland's work in a mock-up laboratory built in the studio. Under the powerful studio lights, and in the film itself, the glass apparatus gleamed seductively, leading me to reflect on the wonderfully photogenic nature of chemistry. The visual appeal and power of alchemical paintings, symbols and emblems was elegantly captured by John Read over 50 years ago in his splendid book, The Alchemist in Life, Literature and Art (1947). As far as the ideas and practice of chemistry are concerned, however, the economics of publishing has usually dictated that narrative should dominate over art. There have been attempts at greater pictorial generosity. The scholarly pre-war A Pictorial History of Chemistry (1939) by the pharmaceutical historians F. Ferchl and A. Suessenguth has long been a collector's item, but more recently the organic chemist and bibliophile, Arthur Greenberg, produced the light-hearted A Chemical History Tour: Picturing Chemistry from Alchemy to Modern Molecular Science (2000). (See rev. CH 19, Spring 2001) Primed by the deserved success of the latter, Greenberg again whets our visual appetites with a companion piece that provides another well-stocked gallery of pictures drawn from title-pages, tables and diagrams, cigarette/baseball cards and art works. These are used to illustrate three predominant features of the discipline's intellectual and experimental development -its myths, its medical connections, and its primary concern with materials.
Although one of the author's aims is didactic - to help non-scientists understand how science works and to show how chemistry was done before it became largely hidden in black boxes - the predominant purpose (as with the former volume) is to entertain. The format and style are identical to the Chemistry History Tour: 188 illustrations (19 in color) and 72 essays. However, whereas previously the essays were elaborate captions to explain the pictures, in this sequel the illustrations serve to illuminate the essays that form a delightful "random walk through chemistry's imagery." The generously-sized reproductions have been selected from his own library, as well as that of fellow bibliophile, Roy G. Neville, and the Othmer Library of CHF. The essays, roughly signposted from chemistry's spiritual and mythological past through the twentieth century, are essentially playful and satirical, and sometimes earthy in humor.
As with his previous book, there is material here in plenty for the chemist and bibliophile as well as for the "amiable historian" (Greenberg's wily term for the critical historian). In my own case, I was intrigued by his perceptive remark about a slower process of metamorphosis replacing stories of the instantaneous transformation of people and things in the twelfth century. I noted a primitive fume cupboard in a print from Johann Kunckel's Ars vitraria experimentalis (1679). There is a valuable comparison between affinity and periodic tables. It is challenging to have Greenberg's opinion that in 1853 Jules Pelouze and Edmond Fremy published the most beautiful textbook of chemistry ever written (Notions gnrale de chimie) in contrast to the awfully dull Chemia Courtata ("compressed chemistry", 1875) by the Montreal pharmacist A. H. Kollmyer. He also gives a much more complete discussion than I have seen before of the clairvoyant occult chemistry of the theosophists Anna Besant and Charles Leadbeater. As an old fan of Prout's hypothesis, I was also educated by Greenberg's observation that the speculation would never have been possible if the ratio of protonium to deuterium were 80:20 and not 99.98:0.014. Finally, I can't wait to find a copy of a novel new to me: Edwin Herbert Lewis, White Lightning (1923) whose 92 chapters are named after the elements and sequelled in order of their atomic numbers.
Idiosyncratic, self-indulgent and even corny, Greenberg believes chemistry to be fun. It is much to be hoped that The Art of Chemistry, like A Chemical History Tour, will find its way into school and college libraries and encourage a new generation of students to laugh all the way to the lab.

A Little Something For Everyone
By Bruce Durham
This collection is a mixed bag, a little something for everyone. Some of my favourite stories featured the duo of Wolfram and Tyr, set during the disastrous (for Constantinople) 4th Crusade. Another to recommend is 'The Mad Song'. But the gem of the bunch is the Lovecraftian-SF story 'Gods in the Darkness'. This tale illustrates David West's descriptive prose style at its best.

... series of short stories is some of the most fun Sword Sorcery I've read in a long time
By R.R. Hunsinger
This series of short stories is some of the most fun Sword Sorcery I've read in a long time. The duo of Wolfram and Tyr set around 1000 AD in Constantinople has a little bit of R.E. Howard's historical action and a smidge of Liber's Fafard and Mouser. But wholly the writer's own.

Aside from that wonderful and I look forward to more
By Richard Fisher
This was an enjoyable group of stories. The Mad Song and The Dragon Skald were my favorites, and the Tyr and Wolfram stories aren't to be missed either. I couldn't give this title a full five star because one of the last stories, I think it was Walking Through Walls, isn't finished within this book. There was a link to finish it elsewhere. Aside from that wonderful and I look forward to more.

Sofie is as surprised as Paul at how close she and Clea quickly become.

When Sofie discovers that Clea is planning a road trip to check out some American colleges over the winter break, she invites herself along, causing more issues with Paul. From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Lorimer's "SideStreets" series continues with Femme, the story of Sofie, a struggling student who values free time and her boyfriend Paul more than academic success. When she is paired up with smart, driven, out lesbian Clea, Sofie is nervous about her reputation. However, as the two grow closer, Sofie begins to question herself and her relationships. A short hi-lo title that explores the complex topic of sexuality at an accessible, third grade reading level. Teenage Stelle uses music to escape the challenges of an unhappy home life in Beyond Crazy, only to find that her bandmates have challenges of their own. Her only chance at resolution seems to lie in the convoluted conversations she has with her grandmother at her nursing home. An unflinching look at mental health issues and family dysfunction, written at a fifth-grade reading level. In Fight Back, angry teenager Tyler Josten has always used his fists as his outlet, battling whoever gets in his way. When trouble with the law sends him to foster care, Tyler is welcomed with compassion, and his violent impulses are transformed with the art of boxing. A novel aimed at high schoolers, written at a fifth- grade reading level.

Review
"Very well written and this book has a tentative and sweet feeling to it. . . [The author does an excellent job of showing us the struggle Sofia feels. Very well done." (Tina Avon, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-04-06)

"I really enjoyed this title, and would probably try others in the series. The main character's struggle with her sexuality was believable and the romance between the two girls was really sweet and supportive. Although hard to read, the bullying aspect was realistic." (Amber Mann, Educator at AEA 267, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-04-06)

"Read this enticing page turner that everyone, young and old, should read, of how one person discovers her true self – you will learn a lot about life about yourself and others." (Bill Baker, Educator at York Schools 2015-04-03)

"I fully enjoyed reading the story of Sofie finding out what she wants out of life. Mette Bach approaches the story in a very believable, non-judgmental way and handles all sides of the story with the utmost care. All characters are painted as realistically as possible. There are no true villains and no heroes . . . It is one of the better 'coming out' books I have read in YA lit . . . This book presents the reality and prepares students for the same experience from many different perspectives . . . Fantastic and well-written, this book will find its way into my hi-lo collection on my next book order. Highly recommended." (Mandy Peterson, Librarian at Schuyler Central High School 2015-03-28)

"[Both heart breaking and exciting . . . I highly recommend this book . . . I adored it." (J. Hooligan, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-05-18)

"This was a lovely written hi/lo novel of a young woman coming to terms with her sexuality, her changing feelings for her significant other and a new friend . . . I thoroughly enjoyed that none of the characters fell into a rote enigma and cardboard representation of a social status but came off the page as real teenagers . . . [An engaging young adult realistic fiction especially for reluctant readers." (Rosalyn Spencer, Educator, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-07-25)

"The novel isn't a treatise about queer identities, so it doesn't offer an answer on what this complicated concept means. But it's a great introduction to how identity can be a segue for a love that, even in 2015, cannot speak its name." (Kirkus 2015-07-15)

"Bach offers a new take on the queer coming-of-age story, one that aspires to retire stereotypes and old tropes in order to give young queer people hope." (Adle Barclay, Plenitude Magazine 2015-08-13)

"This book was a fast, sweet read! . . . [This was a really fun little book, and I would definitely pick up more of the SideStreets series." (Amy Rae Weaver, Bookseller, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-07-14)

"A warm tale of first love, with emotional rapids quickly and deftly negotiated." (John Peters, Booklist)

"Moving and delightful." (Max Thornton, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-06-28)

"This is a great story of two girls finding themselves and love. The author handled the delicate LGBT issues of coming out as a teen, coming out to your parents, being bullied by classmates, and finding your inner courage beautifully. I look forward to more from this author." (Michelle Parks, Librarian at Pascagoula School District 2015-05-06)

"This is a very sensitive coming out story. . . . Bach makes sure that this is no fairy tale rendering of an LGBTQ story - there is bullying and small-mindedness here, but with a spark of hope that makes readers believe that honesty and a strong sense of independence will carry the characters through. Multiple perspectives will help readers identify with different ideas and feelings toward the subject matter, and hopefully open a strong dialogue between teens, parents, and educators. . . . This one will be on my shelves this summer." (Rosemary Kiladitis, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-06-24)

"[A realistic portrayal of a person coming to terms with her own sexuality . . . [A good read for teens." (Meg Eubank, Educator at Bucks County Community College, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-05-03)

"It felt very authentic to me, and I loved Sofie's character growth . . . Definitely a great read for high school students struggling with their identities and wondering what lies after high school." (Jancee Wright, Librarian at ITT Technical Institute, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-04-28)

"[Femme is tastefully done, not giving parents a lot to complain about while still giving students an idea about what other kids have gone through when coming out . . . It's something I could easily add to my junior high library without wondering if I'll have to pull it later. Great story, likeable, strangely mature characters." (Alyssa Campbell, Librarian at Munroe Junior High School, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-05-20)

"Bach approaches the awakening sexuality theme with great gentleness. While the setting and characters may be familiar, the lesbian plot direction is brave new territory. Readers learn along with Sophie about the depth and breadth of this community as Bach purposefully avoids stereotypes and labels." (Charlotte Duggan CM Magazine 2015-09-01)

"A coming out story with a happy ending...There is much to admire in this novel. The importance of teachers and role models in supporting young people as they struggle to find themselves is emphasized." (Joan Givner, Resource Links)

"Femme's cultural relevance cannot be overstated; it touches upon LGBTQ youth, cyberbullying, and the omnipresence of social media and its effect on teens. Bach combines these elements in a narrative that is fast-paced, realistic, highly enjoyable, and, most importantly, never contrived or preachy... Femme will appeal not only to young people dealing with issues of sexual orientation, but to anyone confronted with the thrill - and fear - of embarking on a new chapter in life." (Andrea (Drea) Schnell, Quill & Quire, starred review)

"A short hi-lo title that explores the complex topic of sexuality at an accessible, third grade reading level." (School Library Journal 2015-09-02)

"This is a hi/lo book for high school students. I thought it covered the subject matter very well, and it written simply, without feeling like it was talking down to the reader. I would suggest it to both readers who might have questions about their own sexuality and those who could use a little expanding of their viewpoint." (Bethany Neff, Educator 2016-01-12)

"Femme is safe to add to school collections (the publisher recommends it for ages 13-18) and is definitely a good public library addition . . . Femme also features a strong, positive, mixed-race love interest (Clea’s mom is white, and her dad is black–they’re still together, by the way, and successful, and very supportive of their daughter), and, eventually, a happy, healthy, interracial same-sex relationship. This is worth emphasizing in a YA lit world where 'interracial relationship' is often a signifier for 'tragic/bittersweet ending.' . . . This is a fine title to hand to a young person who doesn’t think they like reading, but who might be looking for a book like this to identify with." (Audrey Snowden, Librarian 2015-08-28)

"I really appreciate that SideStreets and Mette Bach are making LGBT stories available for readers who are still developing their skills, since there isn't much reading material on the subject available below a high-school reading level . . . Femme is a novel that fills a niche . . . It's got wonderful characters, a strong setting, and it tackles real-world issues." (Allie Jones, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-09-17)

Realistic and sweet
By Liviania
FEMME is a hi-lo book. Hi-lo books are written to appeal to struggling readers. They have content that appeals to teens, but are written at a range of lower reading levels. FEMME is written at an approximately third-grade reading level. I really appreciate that SideStreets and Mette Bach are making LGBT stories available for readers who are still developing their skills, since there isn't much reading material on the subject available below a high-school reading level.

Sofia, the protagonist of FEMME, doesn't feel like she has much going for herself aside from her popular boyfriend Paul. When her English teacher pairs her with class genius Clea, Sofia is worried about being judged for being dumb. But the two girls end up being fast friends and Clea helps Sofia nurture her study skills. In fact, the two girls decide to take a trip to the US together and look at schools in Portland. Clea wants to go to Portland because she's a lesbian - the only out one at their Canadian high school - and she wants to find a community that she fits into. To Sofia's surprise, she starts to find where she fits too.

FEMME might be simply written, but it is also sensitively written. Sofia and Clea feel like real teenage girls, particularly Sofia. She begins the novel shallow, with low self-esteem, but she makes amazing strides throughout the story. And even though the page count is short, Bach doesn't just tackle a romance. She tackles issues of identity involving sexuality, race, and class. There is a subplot about cyberbullying too. It all moves by quickly. However, while things are lightly covered, they don't feel lightweight.

FEMME is a novel that fills a niche that desperately needs something. Fortunately, there's much more reason to read it than just because it feels a need. It's got wonderful characters, a strong setting, and it tackles real-world issues in a manner that is positive but not treacly. I found FEMME to be surprisingly sweet.

4 Platypires
By J. Hooligan @ Platypire Reviews
I was given a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Before I start this, let me explain the situation. I'm reading about 10 other books and I get this email from Netgalley asking about reading and reviewing this one. I dropped everything else I was reading, because I do what I want, and started reading this one.

After first, I wasn't sure how I feel about it or what to expect. Sofie was so ... superficial. And I don't mean to judge, but people like that frustrate me. I was interested, but it wasn't clicking. I was really hoping something would pick up.

And it did... once Clea is introduced.

Being able to read as a young adult experiences the realization that she is attracted to someone of the same sex and the consequences that come from admitting it to those around her, it was both heart breaking and exciting. I enjoyed the romance aspect and how the characters change throughout the story. Even if it was totally cheesy.

I highly recommend this book. It has feels, romance, and I adored it.

The Spring Will Be Ours: Poland and the Poles from Occupation to Freedom, by Andrzej Paczkowski

One can think of countries that traversed the twentieth century free from war, revolution, or social upheaval. Such countries, however, are far outnumbered by those that struggled, often constantly, with severe internal conflicts, fought in bloody wars, or were attacked by their neighbors and deprived of their sovereignty. Poland is one of the more startling examples of a country subjected to a steady stream of trials and tribulations from Hitler’s Nazi Germany through decades of Soviet repression. The Spring Will Be Ours, by one of Poland’s leading historians, is the first book written after the collapse of state socialism in 1989 to tell this dramatic story based on research in newly declassified records.

The Spring Will Be Ours focuses on the turbulent half century from the outbreak of World War II in 1939, which started the chain of events that would lead to the communist takeover of Poland, to 1989, when futile attempts to reform the communist system gave way to its total transformation. Paczkowski shows how the communists captured and consolidated power, describes their use of terror and propaganda, and illuminates the changes that took place within the governing elite. He also documents the political opposition to the regime—both inside Poland and abroad—that resulted in upheavals in 1956, 1968, 1970, 1976, and 1980. His narrative makes evident the pressures that the elite felt from above, from Moscow, and from below, from the population and from within the party. The history of Poland and the Poles is of special interest because on numerous occasions in the twentieth century this relatively small country influenced developments on a global scale.

First published in Poland in 1995, The Spring Will Be Ours has been translated into several other languages. For this edition, translated by Jane Cave, Paczkowski has added an introductory chapter on Poland’s twenty years of independence prior to 1939 and an extensive postscript exploring the changes that have taken place since the fall of communism in 1989. A bibliography of English-language works, prepared by Padraic Kenney, makes this book an indispensable starting point for anyone seeking to understand the remarkable course of events that brought an independent Poland into the twenty-first century.

Review

“Writing in elegant prose, Paczkowski makes persuasive comments and judgments about this half-century of Poland's history. The Spring Will Be Ours is a masterly work.”

—John J. Kulczycki, University of Illinois at Chicago

“A must-read for anyone interested in contemporary Polish history, or the development of the historical profession in Poland since 1989.”

—Michael Bernhard, University of Florida

“The Spring Will Be Ours is a major achievement of Polish history. It is the first attempted synthesis of a crucial period, largely falsified in the communist writings, based on newly available sources and interpretations. Paczkowski is a seasoned historian, who writes well and who shows remarkable insights into the problems of the Polish people and republic.”

—Piotr Wandycz, Yale University

“A masterly work.”

—John J. Kulczycki, University of Illinois at Chicago

“An excellent, readable, and perceptive analysis of Poland’s modern history. Essential to a deeper understanding of the experience and orientation of America’s important new European ally.”

—Zbigniew Brzezinski, former U.S. national security adviser

“Under the communist regime, Polish historians labored to make sense of the difficult history of their country, despite censorship and official ‘blank spots’ in that history. Some of that work was published by underground publishing houses, some overseas, and some was kept in desk drawers. Andrzej Paczkowski’s book represents the historical understanding that gradually emerged in Poland in the 1970s and 1980s and reached full maturity in the years following 1989 with the removal of academic restraints and access to hitherto inaccessible sources. The Spring Will Be Ours, authored by one of Poland’s leading historians, eloquently sums up this new view of history and provides major insights into the historical consciousness of the Polish intelligentsia. It is a must read for anyone interested in contemporary Polish history, or the development of the historical profession in Poland since 1989.”

—Michael Bernhard, Penn State

“Here, in lucid, uncluttered, and dispassionate form, is Poland’s political history from September 1939, when German and Soviet tanks rolled in, until 1989, when the communist regime faded out. Paczkowski, a Polish historian, treats in great detail the wartime occupation and the dramatic decade of the 1980s: in between, he deals well, if briefly, with the creation of the regime, the explosive 1950s, and the dress rehearsals of hte 1970s. His analytical restraint and unemotional judgement inspire confidence, as does his dual role as first-hand observer and professional historian. It is, however, disconcerting that a book this scholarly has no footnotes, even for direct quotations.”

—Robert Legvold, Foreign Affairs

“Andrzej Paczkowski’s measured and lightly readable narrative covers every aspect of this story, and his handling of the material is masterful.”

—Adam Zamoyski, Times Literary Supplement

“The book’s strengths are great and many.”

—P.W. Knoll, Choice

“The writing is lively and engaging. Paczkowski is very comprehensive in his coverage and does not seem to miss an issue or leave an event uncovered.”

—Mariusz Sumlinski, Polish Library News

“In summary, the book provides a rare mirror of history in which those who made, and those who were subjects of, the events described in the book can see themselves and each other. One only hopes that Paczkowski will follow this achievement with an equally rich and revealing description of the most recent Polish history.”

—Mariusz Sumlinski, Polish Library News

Informative!
By Ed Barbie
I don’t have enough knowledge about wine and my father will put up a wine business soon. He told me that I need to study wines and I am thankful that I found this book because everything we need to know about wine was well explained here. This book broadens my mind about wine and it helped me know the history of it. I learned here how I can choose the perfect wines and how to differentiate them. This book taught me what I need to look on wine labels. I also learned here about aroma and balance. Good job!

Wine lovers old and new would enjoy.
By Frankie
Wine makes me happy, and I never once thought about what makes it good until I stumbled across this book. The detailed breakdown of grapes used, regions and proper aging has become a cool parlor trick when I want to surprise my friends with my wine knowledge, such as stay away from California wines if you don't particular care for the oakier tasting wines and sweet wines should be ages less than two years to maintain maximum sweetness. This guide has also made me better at reading the wine labels so even on my cheaper bottles I know the higher quality wines for my price point. Unlike some other guides, this book doesn't try to convince you of what wines are "good" or which ones you should like. It instead chooses to informs you on what your favorite wine type ( Riesling for myself ) is made from, the region, grapes and aging of it. From there it simply suggest ways to get the most wuality from your wine without overthinking it. Not all the information here is mandatory to enjoy the wines you love. I would flip to my favorite types, find what to look for then take that information with me when grocery shopping. I've picked better wines that is normally pass over with the information I found here! I'm happy for my new favorites and I'm sure if you read this book you'll find some new favorites too!
