An amazing feat of research for the author

Well done R. Kaczynski! Incredible detail including all the pertinent personalities and events that surrounded Crowley during a fascinating time. An amazing feat of research for the author. Crowley is brought to life as an actual person as apposed to the illusive fictional character represented in history. When reading it feels like being a real time voyeur. Kaczynski does a remarkable job of being an unbiased orator of the facts. Includes gorgeous anachronistic photos throughout. Will recommend to others.

Maybe Not So Much

Written clearly but burdened with excessive factual detail, this lengthy life of Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), minor English poet and leading advocate of occult wisdom, could feel like a long sentence at hard labor for many general readers. Crowley is taken entirely at face value: if he says he has performed “magick” or received an angelic visitation, he’s described as actually having done so; if he makes supposedly expert references to ancient Egyptian and Hebrew language and symbolism, he’s faithfully quoted; if he lavishes energy and money on unsaleable manuscripts or rituals, titles, and temples (what many would consider the quibbling politics of mumbo-jumbo), every action, reaction, and contention is solemnly recorded. Each sexual liaison gets equal-time treatment (without excitement); every friend or associate is sketched and followed as if obviously interesting and important. Young Crowley is shown as rebelling against the repressive “Plymouth Brethren” Christianity of his childhood - but with that insight, analysis essentially stops. Yet this is a man who, half way through his life, may already have climbed all the mountains he would ever climb and composed all the non-potboilers he would ever write. Keeping old things going year after shabby year makes not all that enchanting a story.
Having so little critical judgment of Crowley and his thought allows no clear assessment of his role or importance in 20th-century intellectual and cultural history. At least this work establishes that he was not into stage magic, seances, or black magic. But readers may sense overly facile generalization in the Epilogue claim, “Aleister Crowley stands as one of the most remarkable and innovative figures of his century: a man of fervent belief, he devoted his life and squandered his fortune seeking a glimpse of spiritual truth and sharing that vision with anyone willing to listen.” A later discussion of “Crowley’s substantive merit” seems directed at doctrinal details important only to persons already converted. Evaluations might change greatly if “His poetry undoubtedly ranks among the finest ever written,” as the Epilogue headline has Hereward Carrington claiming. But Carrington is an investigator of psychic phenomena, not an established poetry critic.
Some important persons in England took Aleister Crowley seriously, from time to time, including school authorities, newspaper editors, and law court judges: my own interest came from finding that General J. F. C. Fuller (father of Blitzkrieg theory) was once a devotee of Crowley’s doctrine - but I understand that oddity only a little better after this reading than I did before (though I recall that George Patton had eccentric beliefs also ... I'd have thought that "Do what thou wilt" would have limited appeal to military minds!). It seems that the irrationalist side of 20th-century experience is widely ignored, except for poets like William Butler Yeats or ideologues like Hitler and Mussolini or psychological theorists like Jung. This book may not be the best cure for that omission, and overall I feel it could benefit from condensation.
That seems unkind to say about a “revised and expanded” edition, and some may argue that the abundant Crowley quotes given in the text could help readers reach their own evaluation of the man, his movement, and his era. And of course Crowley still has many followers, who possibly value the very traits in this book that I see as shortcomings. David Shoemaker summarizes their doctrine in Living Thelema: A Practical Guide to ... Crowley’s System, which is also available on Kindle. Writing as a general reader and not a follower, however, I find Perdurabo paradoxical: a plodding, superficial book about a vaulting, incisive personality.

An outstanding revision to an already exemplary work!

Dr. Kaczynski had already written what many people regard as the best biography of the enigmatic Aleister Crowley, his original "Perdurabo;" the out-of-print paperback currently sells for $90-100, as do the privately published volumes "Perdurabo Outtakes" and "Panic in Detroit." This revised and expanded version is fleshed out with 150 pages of largely new material-- per the author "there is very little overlap between these books and the revised and expanded edition."
This lovely and beautifully bound hardback edition has been highly anticipated and is sure to be a collector's item in years to come. Get it while you can!
