A classic
By Reader in St Pete
Well written, consistently interesting and structured around the challenges of topography and the urban form demands invoked by market needs, political architectures and cultural expectations through history, this beautifully illustrated book delivers the promise of its title and a lot more.

Because the author, Spiro Kostof, organized his book by patterns and topological relationships, the text compresses history and geographies into a comparative perspective. This presents a disadvantage to the reader if he/she is interested in only one time, one culture or even just one architectural movement.

On the other hand, the comparative perspective lends authority to Kostof's overarching theoretical approach of connecting urban forms to content and how those relationships persist across the spectrum of the human experience. A must for any architect's or planner's library.

Excellent for architects
By Lara
The book is very illustrative, the author is clear and uses many examples. He foccuses on the physical shape of cities and how they have been altered throughout hostory. This is not a history book, this book is very architectural, if that is not your goal, you might reconsider it.

A lot of cool city maps, interesting how cities evolve over time
By Paul Fields
I really like this book, there are a lot of made up cities and towns in some of the games that I play and I find it fasciniating how historical cities and fantasy cities are designed. The author lays out some different design styles for cities and then shows some examples of historical cities that match these styles. A good reference for anyone designing fantasy maps, or just students of architecture or history.

The Missing God--Who is Not Missed: Christian Belief in a Secular Society, by Philip Fogarty

More and more people today put their faith only in what they can see, experience for themselves or scientifically prove. Anything else is seen as mere conjecture. Since we cannot see God, or prove God's existence with the tools of science, increasingly people decide that God's existence is but one theory among many, and the question of God becomes irrelevant or even non-existent for many people. There is a slow but inexorable move towards agnosticism. God is missing but not missed. In such a secular culture, many Christians feel the need to ponder again age-old questions about God and about Christian faith, and that is what Philip Fogarty sets out to do in this book. How can we reconcile the existence of God with all the suffering in the world? Is the God of the bible nothing but a vengeful God? Who is Jesus? Was he just a good man or was he truly divine? Did he rise from the dead? What do we mean when we say Jesus is the Saviour of the world and is he the only saviour? Has the church a future? Philip Fogarty is a Jesuit priest based in Dublin.

An invitation to return...
By FrKurt Messick
Near the end of this text, Philip Fogarty SJ asks a question - 'Are priests no more than dinosaurs lumbering their way into extinction in a dying church?' Perhaps it is my imagination, but I have been hearing the correlated reference between religion and dinosaurs, Christianity and dinosaurs, or church and dinosaurs so often lately, that I'm beginning to wonder myself. What is happening in the world today?
There was an intriguing idea floated by a scholar of the Hebrew scriptures, who argued that, as one progressed chronologically through the scriptures, the actual presence of God became less and less; God appeared fewer times, spoke fewer times, even as references to God remained steady, or even increased.
This is not the case today. As Fogarty's title suggests, God seems to be missing. However, the consequent references to God in greater society have not increased to make up for this absence. Is it that we just don't care about God anymore? Is God not so much dead, as irrelevant?
Fogarty explores the attitudes in society today, heavily influenced by science, economics, politics, and psychology. There is a fundamental disconnect between what is being presented in church and what is being presented and held up as valuable and credible in the rest of society.
Even the ideas of miracles, the resurrection, the presence of God in community (at the very least, in the church) seem to have disappeared in modern culture. Even the 'old standby' ideas and preach-able topics of the church are gone. 'What ever happened to hell?' Fogarty asks, with some seriousness, as an example of how the church has re-categorised old ideas, in an attempt to make them more relevant without losing the power or meaning, but somehow missing the mark.
From the earliest time of religion, God existed in community - in fact, one of the intentions of creation, many theologians postulate, is that God desired and desires to be in community with other beings. Fogarty challenges the readers in his final section to look for and develop community, to develop communion with each other. This is not just a task for the laity, the people in the pews, but also for the people in the pulpits and at the altar. Are priests and pastors ready to preach the gospel, and live the gospel, that of love?
Fogarty uses the example of Jesus, saying that Jesus never tried to convert anyone, while recognising the faith that was present in them. This can serve as a model of interfaith and ecumenical dialogue. Fogarty also uses Rahner as a support for developing the idea of priesthood into that of being a community builder, and not simply an administrator of sacraments.
Overall, this book is an intriguing and inspiring look at the church inside and outside. Well-written and engaging, the book has a flow of spirit that invites the reader to address the questions beyond the words of the text. 'Who do you say I am?' Jesus asked. This question is still relevant today, as Fogarty commends to the readers the charge of building communities in which the Kingdom of God can become present.

A moving debut
By A Customer
I'll keep it short and sweet. Three things make this book stand out from other short story collections:
a) It is written incredibly well. The stories flow effortlessly, are written with excellent imagery and figurative language, and invoke everything from heartache to nausea.
b) It is one of those books that you could read one time for enjoyment... or you could read it three times and dig up all the many meanings.
c) This is not your Nora Roberts soap opera. Anybody can use sex and violence to make a book captivating, but it takes a master to weave a beautiful story from something more simple. Without becoming boring, Doerr masters this.
Read it, love it, and tell your friends to do the same.

The Role of Mystery in Fiction
By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
If you were to tell me that The Shell Collector features mostly stories about people who find majesty, wonder, awe, and rejuvenation through the Mystery of Nature, I would roll my eyes and dismiss the story collection as a precious sentimental meditation on the natural world worthy of a Hallmark Card. However, the aforementioned themes are rendered with expertise, vigor, and indeed pure poetic prose so that even a cynic like myself was able to surrender to Doerr's magical stories. Here are some highlights:

1. The Shell Collector: A scientist who collects shells lives like a hermit in a isolated coastal land in Kenya where he discovers an elixir, derived from a sea snail, which forces him to contemplate the manner in which civilization usurps all of nature's wonders for its commercial purposes.

2. The Hunter's Wife: A man takes his wife into the barren wilderness where she eventually leaves him to pursue a career as a celebrity New Age figure.

3. The Caretaker: An African refugee who has seen unspeakable evil during civil war and has been coerced into doing something that violates his conscience moves to an ocean house in Oregon where he learns, through the help of a young woman, to find his redemption.

4. Mkondo: A white fossil hunter goes to Tanzania where he becomes obsessed with a young African woman whom he marries and takes back to Ohio. There the woman languishes in despair until she finds her vocation in photography, which brings her closer to nature.

Over and over again, Doerr pits the vulgarity and soul-sapping forces of civilization with the pure spiritual powers of nature as his characters attempt to straddle both worlds.

For a thematic companion to Doerr's stories, you might want to look into the 1971 film masterpiece, set in Australia, called The Walkabout, which wonderfully is now available on DVD.

A new, fresh highly focused voice in American literature
By Grady Harp
Anthony Doerr is an amazing talent. His chronological age (28) does not match his literary acumen, for here is a new writer who knows his craft so well that he is destined to be one of the more important authors of his generation ... and beyond.
In THE SHELL COLLECTOR Doerr has assembled short stories that are wide ranging in locale and in content. How he is able to convey with such clarity the terrain and atmosphere of Liberia, Finland, Bavaria, Ohio etc may be credited to his own travels, but I think it is more a credit to his gifts of creating backdrops for his dramas. The young man is so in tune with nature that in a few words he is able to descibe the advent of spring, the caustic stillness of winter, the miracles of ocean life and seeds becoming plants as well as the domain of butterflies. His characters are driven in a synchronicity with natural forces to the extent that at times we are left to ponder whether the human with a name is more the main character than the land wherein he dwells.
Another aspect of the excitement these stories generate lies in the incredible tales themselves. There are no usual rehashs of familiar prototypes: each story is a cosmos rarely explored. Combine the magic of his limitless imagination with the glory of his writing skills and see if you don't agree that this is a Major New Voice in American literature. One waits for an extended novel without any concomittent fear that he will be able to produce it. Bravo!

Unlike other introductory theatre textbooks that are often written for theatre majors and assume a considerable amount of previous knowledge, this text is designed for the general education student in college - one who may not be familiar with very many plays and has only seen a limited number of theatre productions. Because it can be difficult to make references to works that students are already familiar with, this text focuses on just four plays: the tragedy Macbeth, the American classic Our Town, the landmark African American drama A Raisin in the Sun, and the contemporary rock musical Rent. At the beginning of the text, each play is described with plot synopses (and suggested video versions), and then these four representative works are referred to throughout the book.

By using these four model plays, this textbook aims to inform the student about theatre arts, stimulate interest in the art form, lead to critical thinking about theatre, and prepare the student to be a more informed and critical theatregoer. The textbook looks at both the theoretical and practical aspects of theatre arts, from the nature of theatre and drama to how it reflects society to explaining the processes that playwrights, actors, designers, directors, producers, and critics go through. Finally, the textbook addresses students as contemporary theatregoers and offers ways in which to better view a theatre production, to discuss it critically, and to do a written evaluation of a theatre event.

Structured into seven chapters, each looking at a major area or artist - and concluding with the audience and the students themselves - this unique approach to theatre thoroughly addresses all of the major topics to be found in an introduction to theatre text.

Great Basic Overview of Theatre!
By Ashley Eckersley
It's a great basic overview of theatre. I wish there was a litle more about classical Greek theatre and its stage set-up, but overall it's great.

Intensely Beautiful!
By TreeTX
Two unique, smoking hot, and amazing men are best friends to Lauren. Jason and Russell have been the best of friends for many years... Does Lauren risk their friendship for a chance at more? Or, will she walk away to protect them all?
I found this book to be extremely thrilling. Not in the sense of adventure, or suspense, but the affairs of the heart. Emotions are the most intense when dealing with relationships and how to walk the line of what is right, wrong, possible, or impossible. You find in Trifecta this tightrope. When given the ultimatum....do you choose friendship or love? I found this story to be a beautiful telling of how deeply one can feel and the lengths you will go for that love. The descriptions were spot one, and the internal turmoil she faces is phenomenal. Its written extremely well. The heartbreak is hard to read, and the love scenes are very potent! For a menage, this was beautifully done. I'm not normally a reader of this genre, and it was a book that I will undoubtedly read many times. I enjoyed it immensely and I recommend it to all.

Different But Memorable Trouple Relationship
By A. Grayson
Lauren, Russell, and Jason has one of the most strangest relationships I've read. Although I have not read many trio couple books I know that their relationship is not of the traditional trio type.

Lauren is confused on what she wants in a personal relationship. She loves her two roommates and two best friends from college, as in really loves them. She's wanted a relationship with the two of them for years but have been afraid to voice her wants and desires. She also wants to be a respected member of society and have the rich husband and 2.5 kids. Oh and a very expensive and popular handbag. She can have the latter with one of her clients, but she'll have to give up any dreams of being with Russell and Jason.

Russell is the typical rich kid that has the typical opinionated and simple minded, rich parents. He has wanted Lauren since he first laid eyes on her. He is a computer genius that oversees the IT department in a computer company. His parents, however, want him to come to work for his father's firm and become a lawyer. What he does for a living is not good enough in their eyes. He fears they will look down on him for being in a relationship with a woman and another man. He also fears society will shun him and struggles with letting the public know of his trouple (trio-couple) relationship. He tries to hide it, which causes problems between the three.

Jason, a struggling artist, has also wanted Lauren from the beginning. After receiving a bad review from a critic at his last art show he has had a hard time coming up with any new material. He blames this on his feelings for Lauren that he has had to suppress for years. He talks Russell into finally giving into their feelings for Lauren to try and help him out of his funk.

This is where the relationship turns different. Normally, when you read about a trio all the parties are of equal ground and go with the flow. Not with this trouple. If Jason touches Lauren, then Russell has to, in turn, touch her the same way. If Russell buys Lauren a gift, then Jason follows suit. It's like neither minds if the other is with her, as long as all three are present, but they have to be equal in all ways. They don't want the other to one-up them. It's kind of like their in a competition for the same women but without all the fighting and drama. They want to share her but they want to make sure she doesn't receive more attention from one than the other. I really like this read because theirs not a lot of the normal misunderstandings you see so often in books now-a-days. Yes, there's issues but they are resolved pretty quickly.

Although their relationship was different and not one I've encountered before, I really enjoyed the book. However, there was one issue that was never resolved for me. Did Russell have romantic feelings for Jason? Were they going to further their relationship to where Jason and Russell will become more intimate? I'm not sure if KC is planning a second book or not but I would love to know if Russell and Jason dig deeper into their relationship.

I really enjoyed KC's writing style. A big pet peeve of mine is when an author tries too hard with her writing that you can tell it doesn't come naturally to them. They input big complicated words when a shorter alternative word would have been better. And vice versa, they show their limited vocabulary when they only use common and simple words. KC used a nice mixture of both and you could tell it came naturally to her. She knew what to say, how to say it, and when to say it.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book.

Romancebookworm's Reviews
By Victoria Rainey
Jason Morgan is an artist that usually making magic on canvas and trying to be discovered and make the big time. What he wants more than anything is his two best friend all in one relationship together. Maybe it’s the artiest in Jason but he sees the world in more than black and white. I don’t think it would have occurred to either of the others to have a mnage relationship.

Russell Sinclair is Jason’s best friend since elementary school. He is a computer Architect. He is always in control and the opposite of Jason. He thinks thigs through before acting. Russell comes across as the guy every girl dreams about.

Lauren Redmond is an aesthetic sales rep to Beverly Hills dermatologist. She is on her way to landing a Doctor for a husband. However to do that she needs to put Jason and Russell away and that is a lot harder than she seems to think is it. She also wants both of them as well.

The chemistry between Jason, Russell, and Lauren is blistering. The sex scenes were scorching hot. In the bedroom, they have it all figured out. It seems once they leave the bedroom the three of them forget that they are friends and stop communicating. It’s almost like the other person should just know what the issues are.

I found this story to be well written and exciting. The main and secondary characters were interesting and realistic. My only issue with the book was it was a bit long winded and it was hard to see that the three were friends when they did not talk to each other much. I did like seeing the three of them try to make the relationship work and the issues and problems that arise when one has an unconventional relationship in a conventional world. Overall, this was a good book.

It is essential to examine both the concept of intellectual property and the reasons why a legal system might incorporate such a concept. We are increasingly told that the wealth of nations, consists in 'intangible assets,' which include the products of human creativity, ingenuity and effort. It is frequently argued that these assets represent the future of the developed economies and that their adequate protection by the intellectual property regimes is essential to national, regional, and even global, prosperity. We are also told that the creators of such assets have a strong moral claim to them, and that developed legal systems should recognize this claim.

This text examines the ethical issues and debates surrounding intellectual property law and focuses on three aspects of the major intellectual property regimes: subject matter; the allocation of the first ownership of rights; and the scope of protection. These three aspects of the major regimes provide readers with a strong sense of the shape and purpose of the most important intellectual property systems.

Eye Opening
By Amelia Wallace
I'm a religious person so when I read the first few sample pages of this book, I immediately noticed the bible quotes. This book is a short account of what the African American people went through, and the notion that God has always looked out for them. I felt this book was compelling and easy to read. The author's viewpoint is also very interesting so you might want to read the book for that alone.

A Conversation with Francesca Marciano

What does your title refer to or signify, and why is this the title of your collection?

The Other Language is also the title of the first story of the collection, in which a 12-year-old Italian girl from Rome, in the wake of her mother’s sudden death, falls in love with an English boy with whom she longs to communicate. So she decides to learn his language because she loves him, but also because “one of the many ways to survive the pain buried inside her was to become an entirely different person.” She’s looking, too, for a change in herself. All these stories are in different ways stories about change: transitions—displacements— not only geographical, but emotional as well.

What is your experience with “other languages”? What, do you think, happens to you when you speak a language not your native one?

The book’s epigraph is from a Derek Walcott poem: “To change your language you must change your life.” Learning a new language is an act of transformation; it means delving into another logic, a new mental construct. We become different people when we speak another language, and that can be exciting, rejuvenating—but often frightening, a bit like walking in the dark. In some way by speaking a new language we commit an act of betrayal towards our mother tongue, our past identity. But we also sometimes can, in moving beyond our comfort zones, find a new kind of freedom, and I think a writer can find great freedom in a language that is not his or her own.

Why, as a native Italian speaker, do you write your novels in English?

I lived for many years in the States and then in Kenya, so and I have spent half of my adult life speaking English; it has never abandoned me, not even now that I’ve gone back to live in Italy. It has become my truest voice on the page; it allows me to express myself without the constraints and the inhibitions of my native language. I love how direct and concise English can be, compared with the richly convoluted, often ambiguous baroque of Italian. Plus, humor in English is somehow unbeatable.

All of the stories in this collection involve some sort of travel and going to spaces out of one’s element where one is a stranger/foreigner. Why do you write so much about travelling and feature so many travelers as protagonists?

My life has been quite nomadic, and I find it difficult to call any place “home.” Since I was a child I dreamed of going to live in faraway, exotic places, and that wanderlust, which is also maybe a kind of malaise, still affects me today. Being unmoored from the familiar brings an edge, a sense of vulnerability—which is a feeling I treasure. It’s an excellent state for a writer to be in, as he or she creates something new. And a wonderful feeling to explore.

What is your favorite place to travel? To live?

I live in Rome now, and I have a love/hate relationship with it. More love than hate, I’ll admit. I’ve lived in New York, too, when I was young, and spent quite a lot of time there. But I left my heart in Kenya and fell in love with New Mexico, where I lived for a short time in my mid-forties, and where I return as often as I can. Nature and wide-open spaces play a very important role for me. I can’t bear to have my feet walking on concrete for too long.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In her first book of short stories, following three novels, Marciano (The End of Manners, 2008) portrays women confronted by radical change or an old flame, most often while far from home. Clothes take on immense psychological power, and islands and remote villages become places of abrupt metamorphosis. In The Presence of Men, newly divorced Lara moves to an ancient Italian village, inadvertently causing havoc in the settled life of a gifted seamstress when Lara’s Hollywood brother arrives for a visit along with a tabloid-famous American movie star. A stretched-thin marriage finally unravels during a seductive sojourn in India. A struggling documentary filmmaker acquires an exceptionally beautiful, even magical dress. In the title story, newly motherless, young Emma of Rome is brought to a Greek island for the summer, where her coming-of-age is precipitously accelerated by the company of two alluring English boys. In each transfixing, emotionally charged, sexy, piquantly funny, and perfectly rendered story, Marciano makes you feel the heat of the sun, the shiver of shadow, and the shock of unforeseen lust and loss. As she dramatizes with spellbinding command the revelations of displacement, the aphrodisiac power of fame, and the slipperiness of love and authenticity, you can’t bear to finish Marciano’s superlative stories, even though you can’t wait to find out what happens. --Donna Seaman

Killing me softly with her song
By Nathan Webster
I would not have expected to give five stars to a short story collection where my favorite chapter involved an unworn Chanel dress, and yet here we are.

This book will probably never be a bestseller. It's the kind of quiet narrative that might escape most major notice - but for those who do find it, however that happens, I think you'll feel yourself a participant in an unexpected club. Myself, I was mildly curious about the travel/overseas focus of the short stories and thought it would be an interesting narrative, if nothing especially memorable.

Instead, this collection has stuck with me in way I didn't anticipate. Each of the stories resonated with me for different reasons. It was not just because I had experienced similar situations, but that the emotions of Marciano's characters reflected such heartbreakingly familiar vibrations. It might be nostalgia from an object, like in "Chanel," or from a relationship, like "Roman Romance." In both these stories, she takes what starts as a conventional premise and layers detail upon detail over the character's emotions - never melodramatic, she plays each narrative entirely straightforward. Never is there a demand for the reader's emotion that the situation of the characters doesn't call for - but that deceptive simpleness is what most cuts to this reader's core.

Each story works on different levels. I'm used to short story collections where about 25 percent of the collection doesn't work for me, but in this case I could not pick out any story that I didn't enjoy. In only one story is there a strong off-note: an assault that doesn't seem as serious as it seems the situation should have called for. And in a couple cases the story's narrator is a little whiny - but that does reflect the personality of the character.

It's a gently magnificent collection. A summary of each story's contents wouldn't do them justice - and probably would have turned me off. You can read my other reviews for context of what I normally enjoy, and I can promise you that if someone had told me "your favorite story will be the one with the Chanel dress," I would have passed on reading this collection entirely.

But I didn't. There were moments here that took my breath away. Now I'm glad I'm in the Francesca Marciano club.

A strong yet sensitive voice
By Trudie Barreras
One tends to forget - at least, I do - how delightful short stories can be. Actually, I think that some of Marciano's narratives in "The Other Language" might more easily classify as novelettes, both by reason of length and also in terms of character development and time-span. In any event, this book provides a wealth of variety and insight, as well as atmosphere and descriptiveness. Although all the stories stand alone, and are completely unrelated in terms of locale and circumstance, they do carry a powerful theme of the milestones and crises that the reader recognizes as universal.

For those who are naturally drawn to the short-story format, this book should be absolutely satisfying; for those who would like to rediscover a book that can be picked up for an evening or a leisure afternoon, then put down again for another opportunity without fear of losing the thread of a longer narrative, it could be a real find. Francesca Marciano has a strong yet sensitive voice with myriad nuances.

The power of reinvention
By Jill I. Shtulman
I feel as if I just discovered another goddess of the short story genre. Francesca Marciano's nine stories are so beautifully realized, so breathtaking in their scope, that I lost track of time while under their spell.

"After seven years of European life, she found herself smiling at the predicament she'd found herself in. It was a reminder that there were still places in the world where one could vanish, be lost, be found and rescued by strangers," Ms. Marciano writes in one of her stories.

Indeed, each one is, in its own way, a study of reinvention: of suddenly becoming visible or invisible, of uncovering elusive truths in exotic locales, of turning one's back on a tedious past, of recognizing the person one was meant to be.

In the Presence of Men - perhaps my favorite of the collection - a divorced woman named Lara attempts to reinvent herself in a charming and innocent Italian village. There she befriends an older woman, an extraordinary local seamstress. Yet when her brother arrives in town, accompanied by a famous actor, the ragged seams of the unspoiled town begin to reveal itself.

In another, Indian Soiree, an unmoored writer and his dissatisfied wife travel to India, where both begin to question the solidarity and trust of their relationship and who they really are. "The feeling they both had was of a tidal wave that kept gaining speed and had crashed upon them before they could take cover," the author writes,''

And, in the eponymous story, The Other Language, three young children travel from Rome to Greece with their father after the sudden death of their mother. "It impressed the children and seemed to cheer them up as if this time of greatest loss would coincide with the promise of a richer and more exciting lie. As if, by losing their mother, they had been promoted to a higher level of lifestyle." Many years later, the middle child reflects on what she lost...and more importantly, what she gained.

There is not one mediocre story in this entire marvelous collection. Whether Francesca Marciano is writing about a penny-pinching Italian woman who splurges on a Chanel dress that becomes a lifetime talisman or about a hermetic man who lives in a small island in Africa where he is found by a past girlfriend, the insights are extraordinary. ("Maybe he has chosen this place to venture inward rather than expand, since everything here - the people, the buildings, even the geography - lacks beauty and brilliance").

Do I love this book? You bet! For anyone who gets enthused about internal or external journeys or who are prepared to believe that "one always had to be prepared for anything to happen", this is a short story collection that will resonate long after you close the pages.

Chess Bitch: Women In The Ultimate Intellectual Sport, by Jennifer Shahade

In the game of chess, the strongest piece—the Queen—is often referred to as "bitch," and being female has been long considered a major disadvantage.

Chess Bitch, written by the 2004 U.S. Woman’s Chess Champion, is an eye-opening account of how today’s young female chess players are successfully knocking down the doors to this traditionally male game, infiltrating the male-owned sporting subculture of international chess, and giving the phrase "play like a girl" a whole new meaning.

Through interviews with and observation of the young globetrotting women chess players who challenge male domination, Chess Bitch shines a harsh light on the game’s gender bias. Shahade begins by profiling the lives of great women players from history, starting with Vera Menchik, who defeated male professionals with incredible frequency and became the first woman’s World Champion in 1927. She then investigates the women’s chess dynasties in Georgia and China. She interviews the famous Polgar sisters, who refused to play in separate women's tournaments. She details her own chess adventures—traveling to tournaments from Reykjavik to Istanbul. And Shahade introduces us to such lesser-known chess personalities as the flamboyant Zambian player Linda Nangwale and the transgendered Texan Angela Alston and the European female chess players who hop from one country to another, playing chess by day and partying long into the night. For those who think of chess as two people sitting quietly across a table, Shahade paints a colorful world that most chess fans never knew existed.

Better than Polgar's Book
By A Customer
Jennifer goes into the nitty gritty of the inside world of girl's chess. The fact she is truthful and doesn't spare anyone of either the good and bad of things makes this a better book than Susan Polgar's book.

Do you want a book that tells things the way they are, or a nicy, nicy book looking at the world through rose colored glasses? True, some people want everything will butter on it and feel the world must be "fair" to all.

Perhaps some historical facts are up to debate, but a couple of the other reviewers may have their "facts" wrong themselves and need to provide their "sources" when trying to correct anyone.

AWEFULLY GOOD!
By A Customer
This is the best book with a true perspective of women's chess. Just ask Beatrice Marinello of the USCF (she is a USCF National Master, great chess teacher and has been USCF Scholastic director and Executive Director - Need any more credentials?) who attended the book breaking ceremony with Jennifer Shahade.

It appears that the INTERNET CHESS AUTHOR STALKER continues to attack Jennifer's books (rumor has it that it is a person with the initials E. L. who sued the USCF some 20 years ago or so). Just look at these recent reviews (so short so they could be written in a hurry and be plentiful).

Jennifer Shahade gives her point of view on things and says what she feels. There is no libel at all in the book as you certainly don't see any lawsuits over anything written. It is toned down mellow-yellow like the book on the Polgar sisters (which doesn't really tell it the way it is as it must be rated "G" as compared to a "PG13" for Shahade).

If you like reading a little history, yes with perhaps a little bit of gossip, then you will like this book.

GOOD BOOK - Being Stalked
By Antichessbookstalker
I am the ANTI CHESS BOOK STALKER. Whenever and Wherever a Good Chess Book is being unjustly bombarded by BOGUS kids reviews (and those using fake names on their accounts) the AnitiChessBookStalker will strike. Just like superman (or perhaps in this case a superwomen) I will be there to counter strike!

First of all I have seen JENNIFER SHAHADE in person at her opening book signing and have read her book. It is targeted at an audience interested in a mature approach. This is not a scholastic chess book, though really it is fine for older kids to learn reality about an insider's view of the female chess world.

Once again the stalker will be confronted and we know where to find you!!!
