Soma Mukhopadhyay is the Executive Director of Education for HALO (Helping Autism through Learning & Outreach) in Austin, TX. She holds a Bachelors of Education degree and a Masters degree in Chemistry. Students come from all over the world to benefit from her innovative teaching approach. Since developing the Rapid Prompting Method to teach her own son Tito, Soma has been featured on CNN International, 60 minutes II, PBS, BBC and Good Morning America, and in the New York Times newspaper, People, Scientific American and National Geographic magazines.

Every parent, teacher, assistant who works with a non-verbal autistic person should study this.
Many years ago I saw a video clip of Soma using the Rapid Prompting Method. Even though I considered myself to be open-minded to new ideas I did not think this approach would work for my son. She seemed to talk too quickly (I struggled to keep up with what she was saying) and seemed to be pushing the child in a way which I thought lacked warmth. I was so wrong to form these opinions! A few years ago I watched the clips again - this time through new eyes and I saw the possibilities. I have been fortunate enough to meet Soma twice now and observe her working with my son - she is an absolute genius who totally believes in the ability of every child she works with.
Using Soma's methods my son, Christopher, has not only been able to show how academically intelligent he is - he can now communicate his deeper thoughts and feelings in a way which means that others believe they are HIS words . Christopher does not yet have the motor control to be able type independently, he has lots of behaviour challenges and often his body seems to resist doing what he wants it to - he can be getting up, walking away, being physically rough with me but when I ask if he wants to carry on with the communication he usually points to YES.
I asked him to advise another parent whose non-verbal 8 year old son had been crying and he did not know why :- I AM THINKING HE NEEDS TO TEACH HIS SON TO POINT TO LETTERS ON STENCILS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRkZPsElrSg&list=UUMtrorkbUiDMIwvY2-W5GhQ&index=1
I was recently able to help Christopher `talk' directly to a paediatrician about the seizures which he has had - answering questions by pointing to the letters on the stencil. At the end of the appointment I asked him if he would like to ask the doctor a question - he very purposefully and quickly pointed to- WILL I HAVE ANOTHER FIT. How wonderful it is that he is able to do this and how awful it must be for children who have these questions unanswered in their heads.

Must Read!

Soma is truly amazing! This is a must read for anyone who has a child with non-verbal autism or anyone (Educators) who works with children with autism. Soma's technique is revolutionary and the letter board has worked with our son who has non-verbal autism. Our son is 8 years old and has been seeing Soma for 2 years now. Soma has unlocked his knowledge with the letter board and has given our son a voice! He is using the letter board with me at home and is starting to use it at school with his teachers. Her 3rd book helped me with my technique and educating my son. There are a lot of examples of how to work with different students and how to work with different behaviors. We are so grateful for Soma and cannot thank her enough for what she has done. We are amazed everyday with what our son tells us through his letter board! She has changed our lives and especially our son's life!

Here is a conversation I had with my son...he responds using the letter board:

Question: "How was your day at school? This is your last week of school and then the Summer Break."
Answer: "Better today especially having no episodes in muscles."

Question: "That's good! Do you think the new medicine is helping?"
Answer: "I think time will tell."

Question: "Yes. We hope it will help. Anything else?"
Answer: "I have more to learn and more to wish for a healthy life."

Question: "Yes, we all learn something new every day and we want to be healthy. How's the letter board at school? Your Teachers want to use it with you."
Answer: "I am going to use the Letter Board next school year with my teachers."

Question: "That's great! You need to use it with your teachers to show your knowledge. You can do it like you do with Ms. Soma and with me at home. Anything else?"
Answer: "Went about my day as normal."

Question: "That's good. How do you feel now that you are able to communicate through your Letter Board? Your letter board is your voice."
Answer: "I am very happy since I learned how to use the letter board with Ms. Soma and she gave me a voice to show what a person lacks in speech does not mean stupidity."

Cogent, inspiring, lucid, mellifluous, scholarly

Cogent, inspiring, lucid, mellifluous, scholarly: these are adjectives which describe my reading of Dr. Glenn Siniscalchi’s effort to restore apologetics to its proper place in Catholic life.

Siniscalchi’s book is wonderfully succinct, the 274 easy-to-read pages covering major aspects of Thomistic thought on belief in God, the significant contribution which Christianity brought to a pagan world (that every human life is worthy of respect), the importance of using one’s intellect to affirm faith, and the rationality of belief in a benevolent God Who wishes not only to communicate with His creatures, but also to offer them eternal life.

Thoroughly footnoted with a twelve-page bibliography to encourage further reading, Siniscalchi’s book is scholarly yet designed for popular reading, as the divisions into five parts and fifteen chapters suggest. Thus, the book is a one-stop course in a variety of disciplines. The cultural significance of Catholic Christianity—specifically of the crucial role that Catholic institutions such as charities, hospitals, and universities have played over the past two millennia—is simply inspiring and makes one proud to be part of a universal faith based, not on terror or pessimism, but love and hope.

Catholic Christians of any rite (Byzantine, Melkite, Maronite, Roman, etc.) have always appreciated the inherent beauty of the faith. What impresses the reader on finishing Siniscalchi’s book is how logical the Catholic faith is. Siniscalchi destroys atheist claims skillfully and with grace; after all, as he mentions several times, apologetics involves not merely pointing out another’s errors, but doing so in an appropriate and Christ-like manner.

Siniscalchi is a master of identifying logical fallacies in atheist or heterodox opinions, and he addresses those errors in thinking without engaging in ad hominem attacks. The reader can easily understand the deep philosophical ideas being presented because Siniscalchi’s style is, as affirmed above, cogent and lucid, flowing smoothly from one idea to the next (the meaning of the adjective “mellifluous”).
It is no wonder, then, that virtually every page of my copy has been marked with an annotation of something important to remember, something worthy of future discussion, or something simply interesting to investigate in the future.

Two areas in the book’s production need to be addressed. The second edition should correct some annoying typographic errors. Also, although the content of the fifteen chapters is evident from their titles, an index should be created to assist the reader in locating specific terms quickly.

These minor matters aside, I highly recommend Siniscalchi’s work for all, especially high school and college students. In fact, I can see how this book can be the basis for a series of broadcasts on EWTN, videos on YouTube, or a masterly online course (one chapter each week in a fifteen-week course). Siniscalchi should pursue these opportunities to promote his excellent work.

Don't have time to read St. Thomas Aquinas’ massive works? Can’t get to the entire body of Vatican II documents? Don’t have the energy or the eyesight to plow through the Catholic Encyclopedia? Read Siniscalchi’s book instead. A subtitle for the book could be “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Faith but Were Afraid to Ask.”

Important contribution to Catholic apologetic scholarship

Dr. Siniscalchi's book is an important contribution to Catholic apologetic scholarship. In Retrieving Apologetics, he argues convincingly for a post-Vatican II role for apologetics, using both papal encyclicals and the documents of the council itself. Vatican II did not obviate the need for apologetics, as some Catholics mistakenly think. Rather, Vatican II opened up new apologetic methods. The council, while breaking the monopoly of the Neo-Scholastic classical method on Catholic apologetics, nevertheless affirmed the classical method's validity in its own sphere of competence. This argument comprises the first part of Siniscalchi's book.

The rest of the book is devoted to updating that classical method to meet the challenges of today. It is here where Siniscalchi particularly shines. Before one can begin to make the case for the truth of the Catholic faith, Siniscalchi rightly argues, apologists must first defend the notion of objective truth against the claims of postmodern relativism. He then updates several Thomistic arguments for God's existence, defending them against the particular challenges of today. He corrects many of the Neo-Scholastic errors in their defense of Christianity - rather than arguing for the truth of Christianity based on an outdated notion of historical reliability of the Gospels, Siniscalchi argues that, based on the totality of the evidence (accepted as evidence by both Catholics and non-believers alike), the hypothesis that Christianity is true outstrips the claims of rival hypotheses that would see Christianity as false. Siniscalchi also develops the relevance of the Catholic faith, especially the via empirica, as a method for defending the truth of Catholicism.

Perhaps the best thing about Retrieving Apologetics, and Sinischalchi's work as a whole, is that, while his passion for the subject is evident, he is unflinchingly fair and charitable. As a scholar, he embodies the Vatican II vision that sees ecumenical dialogue and apologetics as not incompatible. As Siniscalchi himself points out, authentic dialogue requires its participants to seek the truth, not gloss over differences.

He Breaks His Silence!

Suppose you were offered an opportunity to interview Pope Benedict XVI for an hour a day for a series of days. What would you ask him? What format would you like the meeting to have?

This is probably the last opportunity, of a total of four, that Peter Seewald has had to do this. By now, I have listened to all of the interviews. The first interview is Salt of the Earth: The Church at the End of the Millennium, the second was: Light of the World: The Pope, The Church and the Signs Of The Times, and God and the World: A Conversation With Peter Seewald being the third. I was very impressed by these. As with this book, I was interested initially and primarily in this because of the questions that were asked (the issues probed are listed above in the book description). They are ones that we all would probably like answers for. I am very curious. I wanted to hear how Pope Benedict would answer them.

What makes it more interesting, Seewald does not supply the questions ahead of time. He asks. The pope responds. This gives us the chance to hear the Holy Father speak his mind unrehearsed. That's also the way the Pope wants it. It is here that we understand his grasp of the Church and its teachings, mission and history, as well as its problems, shortcomings, difficulties and failures. He hides from nothing. In fact, it is surprising how frank he is in his responses. It is almost as if he sympathizes with Seewald's looking for answers. He gives the Church a certain humanness that is very attractive, something that many are looking for at the parish level.

One of the strongest impressions that he has left in my mind as Pope is that he describes his role, not as you might expect--the world leader of a billion Catholics--but as someone who is to bear witness to Christ. He does not pontificate. Pope Benedict is certainly not a light-weight. His wisdom and understanding of matters is such that he can break things down to people at all levels, including children. I was there witnessing this at World Youth Day in Cologne. It was amazing!

I hope to also read this as an audiobook, which I think always adds to the satisfaction of it. It's not the Pope's voice, but you can imagine! As is the case with many books that I really like, I buy both the audio and either the hardcover or paperback edition. Doing that with a book like this allows me to dive into the text to draw whatever more I can from something like this interview I have listened to.

A great contribution to the Church and to people of all faiths. I believe that this can help greatly in clearing up many misunderstandings people may have.

Joseph Ratzinger / Pope Benedict is an Inspiration

Last Testament contains the latest interviews with Pope Benedict XVI (Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, born 1927) conducted by journalist Peter Seewald. Other interview volumes include: Salt of the Earth (1997), God and the World (2002), and Light of the World (2010). This volume includes talk of Ratzinger’s early life up to present day (2016). Again, and again, Ratzinger’s focus on the importance of faith shines through his life. This was a responsibility he accepted and shared with the world. Many details of growing up in Germany were not interesting to me. But his life as a theologian was very interesting especially work surrounding Vatican II and following work from Bishop to Pope. I appreciated hearing a back-room perspective and gained new insights regarding theological development. The interview gives the reader a sense of Ratzinger’s theological development and includes discussion of the German theological environment after WWII. Comments on meetings and influence of Balthasar, Rahner, Kung, and Pope John Paul II were especially interesting. The book allows one to encounter Ratzinger as teacher, philosopher, theologian, and Pope. I also enjoyed learning some of Ratzinger’s personal traits, such as: he prefers to write in pencil and uses his own shorthand, enjoys silence to reflect and a sofa to think, prefers to work during the day and requires a good night’s sleep. There are small gems throughout the book that touch on many areas of interest for each individual reader. Every chapter may not be interesting and may appear too detailed, but my overall take-away is very positive. The book includes a timeline of Ratzinger’s life, but not an index.

A wonderful, inspiring read
By Great Silence
Full disclosure: I am a great Ratzinger fan, and I think hat he is one of the most important Christian theologians of the last half century. Normally I read his theological works, so it was a particular pleasure to read this extended interview which, at a relaxed but insistent pace, takes us through some of this beautiful person's life and thoughts.

I doubt whether the popular misconception of Ratzinger as cold and aloof will survive a reading of this book.
